Could you class Gascoigne as ever being a legend or have his idiototic tendencies completely overshadowed what he did on a pitch ?

I think he was one of the best footballers of his time. He had more time on the ball than all of his peers in this country and had a football vision like no other England player in a generation.
Sadly his temperament and mental issues have caused his decline and I´m waiting for the day it is announced he has passed away.
So much talent, sadly wasted.

People who piss away their talents are far more interesting than those work hard to compete at the top level.

Impressed by your Robin Friday pick. My favourite player of all time, I used to stand on the South Bank at Elm Park as a kid and marvel at his skill. A great loss. RIP the greatest footballer they never heard of.

Pains me to admit it but that is one of the best goals I have ever seen. Can Still remember watching that as if it were yesterday. Brilliant.
Remember playing Rangers in the League Cup and he got dogs abuse from us (Dunfermline) for giving his missus a hiding.
Fantastic footballer and incredibly funny, just threw it all away.
I wouldn't say he has "idiotic tendencies"
The guy is a manicly depressed alcoholic so has serious issues.
I don't think it overshadows what he did on the pitch - like George Best he'll always be remembered as a great footballer aswell as a drinker.
He's always on my list of 'Celebrities who'll die this year' come January though....

he is a manic depressive and an alcoholic, he has been through some awful personal expereinces and has rarely had any one he could turn to who wasnt out to exploit the situation for their own gain.
on the pitch, he was incredible. one of those sublime talents who the phrase "you just cant teach that" is made for. making colin hendry look like a fool in euro 96 was a moment of genius, there are more, the free kick for spurs in the cup final, he oculd turn very well for a "big" guy, he demonstrated some incredible passing qualities and he also played with a smile on his face....the vinny jones incident, "booking" the ref....

Legend. He can do what ever he likes after this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVMaIUSeRxA
That's all I'll be remembering him for, everything else is just background noise.

Total Legend, grew up watching him and in my eyes the greatest attacking player to wear an England shirt, could and would have gone on to be equal to Cryuff, Pele, Maradona, Moore as one of the true greats if he had not buggered his knee in that semi.
I feel sorry for the guy now i know he doesn't help himself but still a legend

Lovely player to watch, genius sometimes, but I can never forget him crying in the semi at Italia 90. Despite the media frenzy and the never seen football before "fans" thinking otherwise,he was f
king crying because he was going to miss the final after being booked, not because we might/were going out.I've often wondered whether if he'd been called a selfish b
d at the time, instead of being labelled a hero, he would have had less attention in the coming years and had a happier career with it.

PG is probably no different to most males out for a good time, but unfortunately once the media catch sight of any weekness they exploit it to sell papers with total disregard to the person they exploit. Any over sensitive being is then cannon fodder.
Met his sister once and chatted, amongst other things, about how the family were targetted by jealous individuals, in his home town of all places. She promised a personally signed photo of Paul. A few days later a signed photo was delivered through my door. People of their word.
