K&N filters? Yes or No, & Chassis rub down
Discussion
Has anyone used a K&N Filter on a pre-cat 4.0 Griff. If so, were there any noticiable improvements and what filter did you use etc.
Also, on similar subject what in anyones opinion is the cheapest worthwhile mod to such a car.
Finally, my car's chassis could do with a rub down and re-paint etc. Any recommedations of people to use in the Cambs area and likly costs etc.
As ever, thanks for the info from all who respond. In previous lives I have had Caterhams, Marcos, Fast Fords etc but no other forums are a patch on this Griff site, bravo PH's.

Filter will make no difference except it is reuseable. No such thing as a cheap mod for these cars. What do you want to do?

Having said that, I dont know what is fitted as standard.
A really gooey oily one by all accounts - I haven't dared put my hand in there yet
edited to say - on the principle, if it ain't broke don't touch it... and no-one sees it anyway!

If its a really gooey oily one then shouldnt it be cleaned and re-oiled frequently?
The oil is to catch the crap I take it?
My Granddad told me how he used to race army jeeps around with modified enigines. For the air filter they used some thin sponge dunked in oil and found it gave better results than their other methods (ie quickest and it still did the job!)

Surely better air filters will make some difference Steve?

Yes they make a big difference to the guys you buy them from as it gives them a bit more bread on the table but on a Griff... no more power compared to the standard fit.

No, they are meant to be oily and gooey, and yes, to catch the crap - I am led to believe that the standard filter needs little maintenance. Please correct me if I'm wrong... does that mean I'm going to have to get me hands oily and gooey

The standard filter is a Pipercross. You can buy a maintenance kit for these which consists of 500ml of cleaning agent concentrate and 75ml of what is grandly descibed as Dirt Retention Additive in a spray mister, which is the sticky stuff. There is enough to do the filter several times and restores the filter to as new, mine was about £12.00 a couple of years ago from a carb and injection specialist.

what about upgrading to a stainless steel Blitz type air filter?... (Meant to sound good too).
ah... now I'm interested... a bit of induction roar at the front to go with the outbound roar at the back
Had a series 2 XJ6 years ago and stuck some nice K&Ns on that (at least you could see em so there was some aesthetic benefit too) and that sounded lovely when it was given some boot

Whilst they argue over air filters
The costs for your chassis depends what it actually needs. If it just needs a bit of a scrape and paint then the costs won't be too high. If it needs a full strip and paint then budget about £4k plus another £1k for all the bits that will need replacing whilst it's in pieces.
Don't forget to waxoyl it afterwards (or there is another treatment but I can't remember the name - search the waxoyling threads and you'll find it).

As Sh, 2 Sheds and V8 racing.
KN (as fitted on mine ie early cylinder filter not panel type)etc are just replacements for an already upgraded item. any gains would be offered against a Rover filter NOT Pipercross. As no Ram air effect is possible without major fabrication work your fine with standard Griff stuff...
However!
the main advantage of the KN item is its size. being slightly smaller diameter, careful positioning allows air to circulate at speed giving correct airflow into the air track. make sure it is set back from the hole in the front to allow air in so it does not draw hot air in from the radiator/engine bay. additional plate/deflectors help this particularly if you replace the crap curved TVR one!
none of this will be seen on the rolling road ofcourse, but will help atain the R/R figure on the road.
