Does anyone else play?

i go through periods of being hooked on Civ. its like crack, very moreish.

Ive got Civ IV and all expansions, on win7 ultimate 64bit and works fine.

Only, i dont have a clue what to do lol. I just keep getting owned, cant work out how to trade goods or what happens when you do!?

iirc you have to be in contact with the civ you are wanting to trade with, and need a surplus of a resource to trade it. trading is a useful way of getting "rare" resources, but ideally you want to be in physical posession of them if you are reliant on them (copper, iron, uranium, oil, coal are all vital at some point in the game). you dont want to rely on keeping the AI sweet to keep your oil supply, just build up an army and take the resource from the weakest civ with a source.

the tutorial is quite a good place to start tbh, explains enough to get you going, i'm still learning 12 months later!!!!

I still play Civ II

The later versions lost the perfect balance of gameplay IMO

I'v got the (plain) Civ4.

Does not work on Windows7 Home Premium unless you install patch v.161

For some reason the patch 1.74 doesnt work, but the v.161 does?!

I have Civ 4 and the expansions that run fine on Windows 7. I got them in the steam sale for about £5, but that manages the updates automatically.

I find myself wanting to try the Civ games again - I've not played since Civ 2.

Is it worth getting Civ 4 (for £12.99) or waiting for Civ 5 to come out (£30 if pre-ordered, coming out this time next month.)

you can get the civ4 back-collection for cheaper than that! i'll look tonight for you.

if you can get it cheap, pick up IV, and start learning the new features over II.

I was bored so I bit the bullet and ordered it through steam last night. Spent about 3-4 hours playing it...and I'm not keen. I've got no problems with turn based games in principle, but Civ 4 (from a military perspective at least) seems rather bland. Perhaps I'm biased in favour of the TW games, but Civ 4 doesn't seem to be a patch on Empire TW.

Unless theres something I'm missing?

In all honesty, Civ has so many military eras that it's never going to master one.

The art is making your bid for being a superpower in the era where you are strongest, IE, early gunpower suits the English, early mechanised infantary, the Germans, early footsoldiers, the zulu's.

There is more to civ than just fighting, it has a good politics element, trying to stay neutral is hard and working out what alliences benefit you in the long run is all part of the challenge!

It is a hard and good game.

I'm thinking more 2/3 here where 4 didn't float my boat at all.

I remember setting up the UN as a wonder, and then many years later losing my game because the UN said my war mongering was evil or some such, despite it being another country being nasty and so I nuked a few of their cities

I spent hours on Civ2, but it seemed to get more glossy without adding much more from a play perspective for Civ3, Civ4 just ruined the clarity that 2/3 had imo.

Agreed. Overcomplicated for no discernable advantage in my opinion. Not the only game franchise to do so mind!
