During WWII the Lockheed Burbank aircraft factory in LA was camouflaged to protect it from attack by the Japanese.

That is really very cool.

How did they hide the runway though? Surely that would have been a bit obvious?

Did the US actually get bombed at all during World War Two? I remember reading about a single attack from the Japanese that may have occured once and did no damage at all, but other than that I can't think of anything.

A bit more info here:

http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/flying/the_disgu...

Seems like a lot of effort, when a Jap plane only has to pass when a plane is taking off/landing, and notice that not a single car is moving, to figure it out.

My Gran used to work at the Avro factory at Yeadon (now Leeds/Bradford airport) and she says that they painted the factory roof green and had model cows on it. Every morning a chap would go up there and move the cows around. None of this Hollywood nonesense in Yorkshire!

That's interesting. Most aircraft factories probably used some sort of disguise during the WW2...

Fire bombed by balloons running in the jetstream if I remember rightly. Quite an interesting story on how it was done. Pretty much zero effect however.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attacks_on_United_States_territory_in_North_America_during_World_War_II

They sent some balloons across the Pacific with bombs attached, which were rigged to drop when they reached land.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_balloon_bomb...

Killed 5 children and a woman.
