Talk to me about Edinburgh for a stag do location.

We're going in March and need to know where to go, and where to avoid. We'll be arriving Friday afternoon on the train, dumping our bags at the hotel (Lauriston Place), and then going out drinking. I'm the stag, so I decide where we go!

We don't want rough places, but we don't want £5 a pint places either. Where shall we base our evening activites? Not bothered about strip-clubs (no I haven't caught the ghey), just want to enjoy several beers with my friends.

Anywhere decent to eat that will cater for 10+ males? Not Balmoral decent, just maybe somewhere to get a nice steak and a few drinks for not too much coin.

On Saturday or maybe Sunday daytime, we were thinking of doing the Rage buggy thing but don't want to travel too far.

Any other thoughts?

I went on one last year it was rubbish.

Non of the places let you in if there are more than 3 of you and the place is a complete cock fest.

This is bad.

Ok, we can deal with the group thing by splitting up into smaller groups. That shouldn't be too difficult.

Not sure how to deal with the cock-fest thing though.

Spoiled for choice, Thre are still some decent pubs on Rose Street, some of the George Street pubs are not too expensive. Cafe Royal, Milne's Bar, Oloroso etc are all close by as well.

We went here for the day activities http://www.quadmaniascotland.co.uk/

It's a fair drive from Edinburgh but well worth it. We flew into Glasgow, hire a car then drive up and stay close by. We then did the Quad biking and Gorge Walking, it was really good. Then drove across to Edinburgh for the evenings entertainment. It was a pretty good evening out, but this was a few years ago before every town centre started banning stag parties. There was a gentlemens establishment called big daddy o's that was rather good, not sure if it's still there or not..

You could go up to Knockhill for a driving experience - only 25 miles from Edinburgh

There's a great karting track just 10 minutes outside the city, both indoor and outdoor.

That looks great, paintballing too. I'll send it over to the best man. Cheers.

Quad Mania looks like great fun, but it's too far for us to go from Edinburgh. Cheers.

I'm going up to Edinburgh in July for my stag do, and am really looking forward to it. I'm very surprised to hear from the poster that had problems getting into places. I've been up there on a couple of rugby trips and a stag do, as well as with the missus and have always found everyone friendly and welcoming and never had any trouble getting in anywhere.

I'm also planning to do the Rage buggy thing, which looks fantastic (that reminds me, I must remind my best man about that - does anyone know how far out of the city it is?). Rose Street is good on international weekends, but not so great at other times. George Street is good and more upmarket than Rose Street, but the Grassmarket is probably the best spot overall, being nicer than Rose Street and not quite so up it's own backside as George St. As someone else said, the 3 Sisters pub is great and is just off the Grassmarket, along Cowgate. The Albanach bar is also a must if you like your single malts. They've got a vast selection which are anything from £2 to £30 a dram.

Only been out in edinburgh once, it was quite good imo. Not sure about places to eat, but one of the places we went to was vodka revolution which was good, just for the novelty of all the different vodkas. Rather expensive though. Never been, but got told about frankensteins too, its had some good ratings by friends.

As for things to do, paintballing is brilliant, iv been to the one in edinburgh and it was great fun, hurts quite a bit though. Knockhill is a good suggestion too, will be pretty expensive though.

Cowgate: Avoid Sigloo.
Lothian Rd: avoid Shakespeares.

"Stag do" places: such as Standing Order/Dome on George St. If it's OK weather, Peartree has good, large open seating area. Maybe erring on studently but these are Edinburgh uni students. Ponces, in other words.
"Pubic triangle" is right where you're staying, Burke and Hare, Liquorice Lounge, Western (?) etc etc (or something).
Re: Food, there's a big Italian place not far, along toward Fountainbridge. There's also Cargo which does good food.
Last Drop in Grassmarket does good food.

Have a look at www.thelist.co.uk which is Time Out for Edinburgh/Glasgow.

ETA, this is next to Cargo http://www.clubhouse.co.uk/

We had fun, as you will as you are with your mates but it really isnt a great location.

The bars wont let groups of blokes in, so you need to be organised and split up.

There is nothing open after 3am aside from casinos.

Espionage was the best club we went to, along with some student place. If you are remotely adult, have some reasonable chat and aren't a dribbling mong you can clean up with the girls.

Dont take a camera.

To be fair, with the girls in Espionage, you would clean up if you were a dribbling mong.

Espionage (Victoria St, just off Grassmarket) has 5 floors of different bars and different music and different types of women. Groups of blokes, provided you're not shedded, are ok. You can get in right up until about 2 am and they shut about 4am IIRC.

Lived in Edinburgh for 10 years and was back there on a stag do last year.

There's a fantastic cabaret club which I'm desperately trying to remember the name of that's opened up in the last couple of years and is really good for a party of blokes too.

Food wise - try stac polly. V good scottish food, room for up to about 12 of you, reasonable prices and good atmosphere. There's a couple scattered around, but the one nearest you is next to the big theatre on lothian road, down towards princes st.

On a stag do, you HAVE to take him to the pubic triangle - burke and hare etc titty bars. Just for one dance.

I must live in a different edinburg to the one you speak of! Or perhaps you were a particularly shady looking bunch!

Edinburgh is great for a night out. Grassmarket's probably your best bet. Loads of clubs on as well, check the skinny.

I'm with you. Lived there 7 years and it's a fantastic night out - unless you look a bit gypo-ish. Even then, there's the Grassmarket....

He's got a (n exaggerated) point about groups of blokes, particularly if it's evident that they're on a stag.
Comedy, if it's your bag, try The Stand or Jongleurs (which has a 3am bar/club downstairs)

I cannot beleive some of the things I've just read - Edinburgh is (probably) the best city in the UK for a night out and it's fantastic for stag dos. I'll post later with suggestions for you. It's also the only city in the UK you can buy drink legally 24 hours a day.

I'm off for a lie down now - you guys must have gone to a very different city!!
