We are making some decisions today about building a new website with a CMS and various SEO options. We have spent a good few weeks seeing various companies/specialists and have a good overview of what to avoid etc.

One question remains:

Is it worthwhile having microsites (30) to enhance linking in Googles' view of things?

Thanks.

If they’re all sitting on the same server / IP Range then they’ll be of no benefit, Google may even penalise you for it.

They need to be all hosted separately to give any decent benefit.

You’d be better off investing this time and budget in getting 30 high ranking (independent) sites to link to you instead.

Bingo. Sure, you can get the microsites to link to you, but if not one is linking to the microsites their links won't carry any weight.

Try to gain links from authoritative sites using linkbait, something that grabs the attention of the mass media would be very beneficial (links from BBC / Sky / Newspapers etc). Also, develop a blog with decent link worthy articles, they may take time to develop but they can bring you a lot of traffic (and links!).

They have confirmed that the links are all seperately hosted.

The company that states this are called "RocketFish" - does anybody on here use them already or know much about them please??

The problem with micro sites is that they each need to be marketed. Depending on how competitive each keyword/market is, this could require a team of people to do it properly and cost a fortune. Most businesses are better off investing in their own site rather than 30 individual sites that each needs its own copy and its own links. From a long-term branding point of view, wouldn't you rather all of that traffic seeing your main site?

Disclaimer: without specifics on the existing main site and the keywords it's impossible to tell for real, but microsites haven't really been a serious SEO strategy for years. Sites that are 1-2 pages don't rank anymore so you would need to create a number of pages for each one.

Gateway sites will provide little benefit as they would have no link weight without any serious link building to each one. As previously said, spend the time and money on getting decent links from relevant sites.
