What a coincidence, I read the title and thought I'd post about my Grados thumbup Although mine are the more affordable SR60i model. Still fantastic, only thing to bear in mind is they do sound a lot better when running from a decent set of speakers. There's a big difference between the way they sound from an iPod or my Bose Companion speakers.

I don't find that at all. I ussually run my grados from my cowon D2 using Q9 or Q10 ogg (much better than mp3 imho) and it is practically the same as if i was running them from my marrantz amp and panasonic cd. i havnt tried them with my dads naim kit with SACD (pioneer D9) yet, but as i am home for the weekend i will try them with that. I am expecting to be blown away. although granted, a decent set of speakers will inevetably sound better than a decent pair of cans.

The sound just seems a lot deeper, with a lot more bass (which you get with these speakers anyway) when plugged into the speakers.

I've got some Sennheiser HD650s which are pretty good, but tough to drive so budget for a headphone amp as well. Thinking of picking up some Grados as well as everyone seems to really rate them for the music I listen to.

Cost for cost though, you get a lot more for your money with headphones!

certainly thats true up to a certain value. I think that once you start going over £300 you'd probably be better off with some bookshelfs (dali ikon 1, mordaunt short, bowers and wilkins, monitor audio or something similar)

Cant agree more.

Stax 4040 (and if you can run to it, the SRM600 energiser).

I have yet to hear any speaker at any price come close.

In terms of detail and resolution, headphones at any price seem to give more than the equivalent speakers. IMO. Of course, if you want to listen with friends, or feel the bass punch of drums then speakers are clearly the best choice, but I prefer headphones to 'enjoy' music. I think I prefer the intimacy over speakers as well - but again, thats subjective.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm going to try some of the Grados in my local Audio Excellence. That's the sort of price point for me. Should run ok on my Arcam Delta 290.

Don't bother buying Grados in the UK, they are terribly overpriced thanks to Grado and their distributors. Have a listen to the Grados in yuor local store and see if you like their sound signature then go straight to the alessandro site and order some MS1 smile

These are modified Grados, and I would compare the MS1 to the SR125. Plus the MS1 cost $99 direct from alessandro and are not subject to the stupid UK pricing.
