On visiting the video(DVD?)shop I have noticed a trend recently whereby i have watched pretty much everything, or have just avoided really bad stuff.

So can anyone recommend a film based on the following criteria:

1. Doesnt have to be Brand New. If anything, not brand new is better.
2. Intelligent
3. Doesnt have to have anyone famous in it
4. Not arty or dependant on 30 minute dialogues to be engrossing

I'm thinking something like The Cube, Battle Royale, Dead Mans Shoes, Amelie, Boiler Room, Memento, which I have all seen but arent what you would call mainstream.

Also i may be a bit of a tt and say Seen It or Own It a lot, so please dont be offended if i do. smile

So go ahead, surprise me with your choice recommendations!

Excellent, not seen those! shall add them to the list.

Is Stranger Than Fiction a bit like Eternal Sunshine - critics love but actually a bit of a hard watch and a bit weird?

Not seen Eternal Sunshine, but from reading reviews it sounds similar. It was the first Will Ferrell film I ever saw, and having watched a few since it's notable for being very unlike any of his other efforts; it's completely free from irritating mugging or toilet humour(I like poo jokes as much as the next guy, but give it a rest!) For the record I did like Ron Burgundy, but most of the others grated. I find Will Ferrell very much like Adam Sandler; occasionally reveals signs of a pretty good comic/character actor but trapped in the body of a raging egotist.

Thanks for those. The only ones I havent seen is Eden Lake (already on the list for when the missus is out) and GN&GL.

Battle Royale is awesome in a quite funnily bad (dont even bother with BR2).

Have seen Oldboy (awesome awesome film) but not the other. Dont mind a bit of subtitle (City of God is plain fantastic) so always happy to watch a film with them.

Irrversible is one film i think i might give a miss. Just sounds a little to much and will be stuck in the memory.

Will try the Will Ferrell film for sure.

R-Point - Korean war-type film non? Will give that a go - bit of asian psychological nutjob film can go a long way smile

GF's trying to get me to watch Definitely Maybe tonight frown I'm trying to convince her Captn Stabbins Assbreakers Vol4 is a better watch...

Another one that comes to mind is 'Point Blank'; a vivid piece of '60s cinema, Lee Marvin is a a very believable (and scary!) antihero. It was remade as 'Payback' by Mel Gibson, which is entertaining but not as gripping as the original.

Also in the same vein is 'Charlie Varrick'.
