At the moment, my gran is looking after my dog during the day whilst I'm at work. He has quite a dominant personality whereas she doesn't.

This morning she tells me that when I take him out I should have him on a lead so that he doesn't run off across the road. She said this because when she takes him out, he he pulls at the lead and is trying to do his own thing. I tell her that he responds to various commands like "heel", "no", "sit" and "stay" and I could take her to the park with him tonight and show her how to better control him. She replied "no".

Ahhh, there is nothing that pisses me off more - stupid fking logic!!

The other day, the OH says one of the rear clusters on her car is playing up. Either all the lights in the cluster are functioning normally, or the whole unit goes offline. Having some common sense and quite a bit of experience with electronics, it was fairly obvious that it was either the earth playing up, or a dodgy plug to the unit so went after both of those.

Cue OH telling me "no, it's not that! If I tap the unit, it starts working again - it must be one of the bulbs being loose or broken."

"No dear, they work in parallel. If one drops out, it won't affect the others"

"You talk to me as if I am a child. Give me that screw driver"

<I go off to make a cuppa and watch>

5 minutes later, she asks me to resume my repairs. I agree, only if she buggers off and leaves me to it!

ARGH!! If you think you know better, fix it yourself - if not, leave it to me!

Actually, I had a dodgy bulb in an indicator which made the whole cluster not work, unless I was indicating, in which case all of the lights flashed. It was bizarre, but easily fixed with a new indicator bulb.

Isn't that one of the man rules? Something like:

Ask me to do something, or tell me how you want it done. Not both.

Precisely. I made it clear that only one of us would be out on the driveway working on the car! She proceeded to shout from the upstairs window! hehe I soon regained dominance and she brought me a cup of tea by way of an apology. Car was fixed by the time the tea was brought out, and all was right in the world. Hurrah

That is a symptom of bad earth. When you changed the bulb, you probably reconnected the earth.

I think the bulb was shorting. It wasn't blown, but the filament was damaged.

To be fair, my entire car has a bad earth though, running at around +5v and I can't work out why.

Forgot to say, thanks for the engine! I haven't got around to doing anything with it yet as I need to get the bolts to sling it on the stand.

With the bad earth, my XR had the same problem - there was a bad connection on the earth strap from the battery to the chassis. No problems after that, and a strong start where there was a weak turnover before.

No worries, hope it didn't leak as much oil in your car as it did in my garage! I had the same problem sourcing bolts, to the degree that I figured if I couldn't even get it on the stand, I probably stood very little chance of being able to rebuild it myself!

As for the bad earth, I've tried all the usual stuff, it's been going on for around 2 years now. Going in before the summer for an entire new loom, dash, alternator, battery etc. etc. If that doesn't fix I shall be mightily miffed!
