Listened this recording from the cockpit of the BA 777 that crashed at LHR a couple of years ago, got to say, massive respect to the crew... the guys did not know if he was going to die in the next minute or so, but held it together.
I do not realise how long before landing he lost power, I always assumed it was over Hatton Cross (almost the end of the runway) but turns out it was over Hounslow Heath (at least 2 or more miles out!)

It's a common misconception that airliners just "fall out of the sky" when they lose power, when in fact they actually glide with ratios in the region of 14:1 (eg. 14,000 feet along ground track for a 1000 foot loss in height in zero headwind).

No doubt it was a great piece of flying, retracting the flap whilst not SOP was a master stroke.

When the news on BBC Radio one reported this story, they said it was a 737 banghead

At least they didn't say it was an Airbus.

The accuracy of news reporting and the general knowledge of news reporters these days is shockingly awful.

The other day when they anounced the death of jazz composer Johnny Dankworth, they kept referring to the fact that he had written the theme for "The Avengers". They then proceeded to play the well known Laurie Johnson composed theme for the Emma Pell series. Dankworth wrote the very first theme for the original series which starred Ian Hendry which hardly anyone remembers these days.

That was sniggered upon on R4 the other day.

Grand piece of piloting in the OP too.

I see your point, but some times they just want / need to get the facts out there, and it's only digit difference, which to some one not in the know may not seem a lot!

Surely "getting the facts out there" and "it's only one digit difference" are mutually exclusive?

Unfortunately these days factual reporting is less important than being the first to break the 'news'. The thinking is they can always 'tidy it up later' (i.e actually do some proper research and get the story factually correct).

And that applies to the BBC as much as any other news source, which is disappointing to say the least.

I was at Waterside when they came in for a debriefing. I think there's YouTube footage of the standing ovation they were given. Totally deserved in my opinion.

The captain has made some excellent contributions to the thread on Pprune about the accident. He's come in for an unbelievable amount of criticism on there (in amongst all hte support) - why didn't you take over, why did you do this, why didn't you do that, we landed it in the simulator you were rubbish etc. - and has handled it really well.

Does the Captain still work for BA now?

Don't know what the recording was on the BBC website as the link doesn't work for me, but here is a surface movement radar picture (poor quality) with the audio of the ATC frequency. The crew sound quite relaxed when they readback their landing clearance, so I assume at this point (30 secs before touchdown) that they weren't aware of their predicament.

Do you have a link to the Pprune thread in question?

difficult link to, site is (P)PPRUNE, and the thread can be found under PPRUNE FORUMS > Flight Deck Forums > Rumours and News > BA038 (777) Thread...

It's a mammoth thread with other 3000 replies!

I'm amazed he's actually bothered to defend himself on personal matters like he has, people questioning his decision of redundancy, being on JSA, his wife giving interviews etc. All from people who hide behind anonymity. Strange.

Where does he first appear in the thread, and what is his username?

Try page 149: Mmmayday38, pretty sure that's him but doubt it's the first post.

ETA: That guy is a hero and true gentleman by the sound of that interview and reading his replies on that thread. Well done him, would happily get on any plane he was flying!
