Screaming !!! TD5
Discussion
Mines a 2003 Disco TD5 Commercial and its worked hard to get to 140,000 miles. Its always made an odd chirping noise when slipping the clutch I put this down to thrust bearing because thats just what it sounds like. anyways up it got alot worse to the point where it wakes the neighbours in a morning when I go to work and frightens small children on zebra crossings, as you set of, forward or reverse it makes a screaming noise, if holding on a bank it screams like my wife did when I first told her I had bought a TVR !! The clutch had become very stiff so had a new one fitted complete with new flywheel at the local LR specilists. For the first 30 miles it was fine, then the screaming started again, back to LR specilsit, who sworn blind they had fitted a new thrust bearing but fitted another one yesterday... today, 30 miles later .... yep !! the screaming is back. Any ideas ??? I really love my disco but am getting to the point where I may just check the insurance and buy a box of swan vesta

Hi,
The noise is the spigot bearing not the thrust bearing.
The spigot is a bush which is in the flywheel/crank (not sure which exactly). Its quite common my Defender does it when cold.

Thanks Steve, spmeone else mentioned that. It had a new flywheel fitted, need to see if the spigot was done at the time The noise is the spigot bearing not the thrust bearing.

Mine did something like this, sounded sort of like a slipping fan belt used to.... anyway turned out to be that the exhaust manifold wasn't tight to the cylinder head. So tightenmed all the bolts and hey presto worked.
Thanks Marcellus but I am sure its not the exhaust, The noise come from the bell housing / gearbox area and only when you a slipping the clutchBadRed said:

Exactly the same noise as ours made when setting off from cold each morning. Gradually got worse so went to dealer who knew exactly what was wrong, - seems to be a very common thing.
Gearbox out as mentioned to get to it. We wre lucky that we had it done under warranty. (It had only done about 20k miles)

Thanks for all you help, it turned out to be the spigot bearing, the local Landrover specialist had the clutch out ( again ) yesterday and stuck a new one in.... now much quiter The noise is the spigot bearing not the thrust bearing.

oh wicked, good news.
mine still makes a horrible noise now and then.
I am going to order one and then make one from a good quality material. Probably phospher bronze so it lasts better.
Glad you sorted it
Sounds like a good idea Steve, the LR one is £1.90 but looks like £1.90 !! maybe a better quality thing, considering where it is would be bettermine still makes a horrible noise now and then.
