My hard drive is failing on my laptop. I have bought another drive and will install it.

But the problem is I want to copy the old drive to the new one. I have a usb harddrive caddy to connect to my computer already.

Can someone suggest software so I get an exact copy that I can install the new drive in the laptop to replace the failing one.

thanks TLG

First, assuming you just have a few bad sectors, buy a copy of Spinrite and run a full scan on your dying hard drive. This will try and move data out of the bad sectors. Second, download burn and boot from the free Clonezilla live CD. Ideally you would use it to save partition table and data to another computer over the network or a spare USB disk. Install the new blank disk to your laptop, connect the spare USB disk with your backup and restore the partitions and data from it using Clonezilla. Finally, if your new disk is larger than the old one, download the free bootable GParted CD and boot from it to enlarge your c: drive to use all the extra space on your new disk.

I use Acronis True Image Home (Free for 15 days)

There is an option under "Utilities" -> "Clone Drive"

Just install the software on the running laptop with the new drive as an external USB drive. One done just swap the drives.
