Doncaster Council has revealed it spent more than £200,000 last year maintaining a failed visitor attraction which closed five years ago.

The Earth Centre, one of the country's flagship Millennium projects, opened in 1999 at a cost of £55m.

But the expected visitor numbers did not materialise and the "green theme park", built on the site of the former Denaby Main pit, closed in 2004.

So, yet another 'green' initiative that has ended up as a white elephant.
