hi i recently sold my car and the new owner has contacted me saying that the rear sub frame is torn from its mounting points but i am finding this very hard to believe as i have driven lots of e46's and this one was by far the best no knocking or other funny noises from the rear

so my question is would it be possible for it to be as bad as he is saying with the car still driving as new

I'm no expert, but, if it failed suddenly after he'd bought it, a) it would feel fine up to that point, & b) there's no way you could predict it would happen. His risk buying an eleven year old car, tbh, anything could happen.

On a private sale it's buyer beware... especially if you and he though it drove fine when he parted with his cash.

I think you can get more info on E46fanatic.com for more info. This is quite a common problem on the more powerful E46 cars.

There is even a video showing what happens when the sub-frame fails.

Some people can fix this with welding etc and metal plates. Main dealer is about £7000 . OUCH!!!

They get put through the most strain when doing a full bore standing start.
