I am looking to install automated wooden driveway gates. Can anyone recommend a company to supply and install the gates/automation. I know that price is usually dependent on the site and type of system etc,...but any idea on the average cost?

And finally are there any restrictions regarding gate installation...does it need planning etc. The gate will open into the driveway so hopefully this would not be a problem.

Thanks for any advice.

Lots of possible restrictions , it is highly likely that you will need planning approval.

Have a word with your local planning office.

The wooden bit is relevant - make sure you're using someone who is familiar with them. We've a wooden gate on an opener which struggles when it's windy. The problem not being weight which the hinges carry, but surface area that wooden gates have far more of than steel jobs.

Smiler.

Thank you all for the advice. I will have a word with the planning office but would have thought that this was not necessary. Especially considering that the gates will open into my own drive and secondly there will be no brick posts, just standard 6"x6" posts attached to the gate.

Has anyone here needed planning approval for a driveway gate?

We've got wooden electric gates and definitely speak to your planning dept. We had to get planning permission but depending on the height of the gates and piers etc. it can be regarded as permitted development so a certificate of lawfulness is needed. The planning dept. will also look at the vision splay and how far the gates are set back from the road, we were told they had to be 5m from the road so a vehicle can be clear of the road whilst waiting for the gates to open.

oh contraire Rodney wink Many a situation requires planning for gates.

The most important check is to ensure you have approx 6m or so from the road edge to the face of your gates .

Planning is also required for any boundary fencing etc facing a highway that is higher than 1m ( from memory , it may be 900mm )
