Setting up FTP on Ubuntu.

Evening...
the title is a little misleading as i know how to set up an FTP server on ubuntu, but i'm struggling with access.
i was to be able to FTP straight into the /var/www/ directory to test websites etc, i can do that but i'm getting all sorts of access denied errors due to permissions.
Ideally i should create a separate user for this, which i've done but now i can't connect with the details i set up, i get loging failed.
So i've started afresh, i've removed all FTP servers and will start again hopefully with some guidance from the PH massive.
There is loads on the web, but my googling isn't very strong it would seem.
Thoughts?
Oh - i'm doing all this from the shell - as i'm too lazy to go in the other room and set it up from the GUI - but i suppose i will if i need to.
I'm also pretty much a beginner with linux, so be nice!

If you're looking for a good server solution which includes a fully-functioning FTP server which you can manage using a web browser from anywhere in your network, take a look at SME Server at http://www.contribs.org
Sorry if it's not an answer to your actual question, but I have used this for 10 years now and it's amazing. We actually run our whole business (web sites, mail, etc. on it).
P.S. I have no personal interest in SME, but am amazed that this amazing product isn't better known. It will do anything that a Small Business Server will do, and it's free.
