Gearbox oil cooler

Hey guys in the know

Can someone advise on a good pump, the required length of hose and a good cooler to sit behind the side scoop (fuel pump side), my gearbox is now ready to make its journey back into the rear of the car again

Look on Think automotive's web site. They have everyting you need.I used a front mount cooler so cant help with selection of parts

Called them but they are going through old job cards to see what they supplied for other Nobles in the past,

Out of interest what parts did you use to do it as a front mounted unit? I guess i could just do the same, infact as my front clam is currently off it may even be easier, cant imagine an extra couple of metres of hose costs much.

I used the long 13 row oil cooler mounted upright(ie not tilted back like the rad)but up against the front clam mesh with custom welded brackets to mount it on.
The pump was the Mocal gearbox one with -6 I think connectors and braided aeroquip hoses all the way.
Their external thermoswitch.
Relay and base as the OEM ones on the rear bulkhead.

I can't remember the prices as I got the engine oil cooler set up at the same time.

does that pump need a certain oil temp before you turn it on ?

used a tall narrow one think its 24row , i,m going to use the think automotive pump with a bolt on thermostat that attaches to the box so it can switch on whenever it needs to .Simon

What length of hose was required Steve?

Will just go for the same, think once its done ill buy another for the engine oil and bin the standard one.

Gadgie I think they supply a temprature switch or on/off switch with them, it can't flow cold oil.

Simon your car is too clean! looks good but think i'll just go with the front mount for both, i've removed all the mesh and crap to open up the side pods to get more air through the engine bay anyway.

ok no worries have fitted a front mounted cooler for the engine ,was told side mounted was ok for the gearbox ,biggest problem was the pumps capability to pump the oil 6 meters !!! which is how much pipe you will need to get from the front to the back !!

The gearbox cooler pump is quite noisy and the only place you will really need it is on track. I wired mine into the spare switch on the dash so that I could just turn it on when going out onto the circuit. In tests at Donington I found that that you could keep engine temp lower by putting the cooler and fans on before the oil got really hot, and I guess the same would apply for the gearbox (ie prevention is quicker than cure when you're doing 20mins worth of hot laps.)

On Richards race car, we found the front mounted oil cooler kept the engine oil too cool, so we fitted the gearbox oil cooler just in front of it - oil 110deg C and gearbox oil got up to about the same depending on the weather and track/length of race etc.

So, be aware that the front mounted engine oil cooler can keep your oil too cool if it's too big.

I had reservations about the oil pump being able to cope with pumping it htat far, but it seemed to work.
