Got this too. Was tempted to go from my 350d to a 50d but now am not so sure. 550d kind of reads like a mini 7D what with the HD video etc. Guess I'll wait and see if prices fall after launch.

Shame they stopped using compact flash cards and it still has a pretty low frame rate. What is the max number of raws it can take in a burst?.

6 Raws in a burst apparently, 34 when saving as JPEG's.

no real improvement on the 500d, rather save the few hundred quid.

£GBP has been battered since then and the 450D at launch was canons entry body, not so any longer with the 550D.

550D looks quite a well specced body, 'similar' sensor to the 7D , stuffed fps and buffer tho.

A 500d is a nice way to get into the hobby, what with up to date features and decent ISO performance, but the 550d, at the same price as the 50d, seems a bit odd to me. I can't think why anyone would go for a 550d over a 50d? Or even over a 500d? Anyone care to enlighten me?

Is the 550D's RRP the same a the 50D's RRP or are you compareing current (launch)street prices?

This is just Jessops website. Just had another look and gadzooks! the 550d is £20 more than the 50d. Are you saying that the street prices on the 550d will settle down after launch? Seems a bit cheeky

What , that launch prices are often high? That the 50D ( considering the 40D is deleted and the 60D is on the way) is cheaper than RRP at the moment?

At one point the 40D was cheaper than the 450D and IMO a much better deal. Some people want the latest whizzy rather than a solid but slightly older model..

I suppose let those buyers get on with it then to reduce the cost of the ones I want down even further biggrin

After i had a 350D i went for the 40D over the 50D, as the 50D was rushed to market to soon and Canon fked that one up! one reason Canon kept the 40D in production.

I agree with the fact a DSLR is just that and if you want a HD video camera go buy one.

Next on the list for me is a 5D MKII

I think canon shocked the market with a 50% increase in pixels and people compared at 100% vs other cameras which is just wrong. The 50D isnt that bad, it just caused quite a stir.

I went for the 40D (secondhand) over 50D and 5DMkI post 350D too, tbh just for the bigger screen as regardless of pixel wars the 350D is still better than I am talented.

I'm sure the 550D will be okay, but at what point will high pixel count start to show up "cheap" glass?

I've had a 300d, traded in for a 400d and now have a 500d, which have all been great. I'm not planning to upgrade to a 550d but may look at the 600d if and when it is released.

Although according to various forum threads, what I should really be aspiring to is a 335d (mapped)!!!

Well I'm just about to move to a 50D from a 400D and see it as a positive step forward. Why on earth would I want video on a camera when all I want to do is take photos?

Ok, forgetting the video (I think most of us would by a seperate device for recording video) here is a wee comparison against a 400D that I made using the data on Canon's website:

Doing the same against the 50D really there's not a lot in it - seems to me for the moneny your choice is pretty much down to wanting video vs. fps - 3.0MP is your other advantage with the 550D. I'm still going for the 50D though as it means I can still use my stock of Compact Flash cards that I have for my 400D.
