Don't want to get raped by data charges, is it as simple as leaving data roaming to off, or is there anything else I need to do?

when i went to france last year, i had roaming off email set to fetch, 3g and location services off. and moved all web required apps to the last page.
its amazing when the phone lasts 3 days with everything turned off.

my monthly bill came to £0.23 on top of monthly contract.

You have answered your own question. But if you are on O2, they do a package that allows for something like 10MB or 50MB of data abroad. Its quite expensive at something like 20 quid for 10MB, but its not a contract so you can just do it for a month and then drop it - for example if you are away for holiday or something.

Roaming data is currently stupidly expensive, and the mobile operators are making a fortune off it. Don't expect it to drop any time soon. Calls are cheap though.

Yes, worth doing if you're going to use any data. On O2 it's £3/MB within the EU, £6/MB outside which can get very expensive, very fast.

O2 are the worst - but only by a bit. Only a matter of pence per MB difference. Gits.

I find it funny* that 02 charged through the nose for roaming costs when I was in Spain recently despite the fact that the local provider was Telefonica, the same damm company that owns/partners 02. Ridiculous. The companies are going to have sort that st out you know, given how mobiles are used now and how many people travel abroad, £3/MB is well out of order.

Oh and just make sure the roaming button is switched off in Settings and also 3G if you fancy saving a bit of battery and you'll be fine.

  • -Not actually funny at all.
