I know it will depend on a lot of factors but what are people seeing as typical MPGs on, say, a 20 mile commute each way mainly dual carriageway?

I used to get late 20's in 300TDi 90 when new on fastish A roads and a 20 mile motorway blast. I could get 30 if I drove like a pansy.

What engine?

Driving style will affect it hugely, as will big knobbly off road tyres.

My 300Tdi used to do 22-25mpg. But driven more sensible you should be able to see 30-33mpg out of a Tdi. Td5 similar story, although when pressed hard they can reach the teens!

I've had my Puma XS for about 3-4 weeks now so did the usual brim the tank work out the literage and convert to miles per gallon. over an average tank, general driving including cold starts, towns, motorway at 70 - 75 in 6th I recorded 28.8 MPG.

Its nice to be back in a happy place again.

I need to bloody find one first biggrin

I expect 200/300 or TD5 given the age I'm looking at, seems either way it will be around the same as my Boxster - I guess any 4x4 is going to be heavy on fuel but I was thinking would it be more economical to try and use it more than the Boxster, seems not though.

Sadly Landys aren't that econonomical. There are alternatives but depends howucb it needs to be a Landy and what you want to do with it, hauling, towing, off roading, etc.
