Ultima supplied the dry sump in the Sports (ex-Palmer) and it's located behind the steering rack and is shaped to allow the collumn to pass through without problems. Good oil pressure all the time without surge.
I'm not sure of the capacity although I seem to recall about 9 litres is required for a complete oil change. I normally keep it topped up to below the top baffle plate - any more and it spews into the breather bottle and doesn't stop until it's running all over the front compartment, dripping on the ground - not good when there's a crowd round you at the Nurburgring car park!
Ask Ted as he should know the details.
Cheers,
Dave.

It doesn't need to swirl. All it does is collect the oil pumped from the engine, and allow any air that has collected in it to escape.
I had a dry sump on my Ultima. There was no swirling involved in the storage tank, just a baffle part way down it to slow the oil down so that it didn't splash into the stored oil below.

So why are they mostly round ? and why on the round tanks are the return pipes welded at an angle like a Swirl pot ?
Whenever I've seen dry sump tank design mentioned they've always had the oil inlet coming in as you describe to deairate the oil. They also mention having baffles to stop it sploshing about too much.
An dry sump tank is going to behave differently to a water one as the oil will pretty much always be more viscous even when warmed up. Maybe it's not as critical and you can get away with a less optimal shape? Do you have space to do a square tank but with the inlet coming in tangentially as if it were round? That might work OK. I guess you'd end up with stagnant oil in the corners but enough swirl to get rid of the worst of the air bubbles...
The one in the Sports is Oval (not square) in shape with a fabricated cut-out for the steering collumn. It runs 2/3 width of front chassis well between bulkhead and steering rack - stopping by the pedal reservoirs. It has two internal baffle plates in the horizontal.
If you remove the filler cap (same as Ultima petrol cap which is a very nice touch) when the engine is running you can see it bubbling away, venting above the top baffle plate into a catch tank. The design must be up to the job as this car has had extensive track use without a lubrication problem and very good (stable) oil pressure. I might have some photos I could email if anyone is interested?

Spoke to a race car engine builder today about this, and his replie was that the return pipes go into a round deairation chamber first but can then drop through baffles etc into any shape you want for storage. The returns pulse air then oil etc, apartently, so tanks also has to have a good breather system, but can be made to what ever shape you want, so a cill mounted oil tank up the front of the car can aid wieght split etc...
I think there are some pictures on my site including some views of the dry sump system. http://personales.jet.es/jmarino

For those running dry sumps, whos are you using, how many gallons are they and where have you fitted them?
Cheers all O.M.G
I bought the oil tank from factory. It goes at the back of the car (left side of the transaxle) it has 9 litre of capacity, no swirl pots needed. Only works in conjunction with the oil breather . It is simply and work fine.
For you boys in the US just try these Peterson unit's, they do a tall 6" Diameter version that I'm sure you could fitt somewhere in the back, if not then fit a Dumpy version of the 9" in the side pods .
Well worth the effert dry sumping...
