There should be a telephone number on the tax code notices that your brother received. He should give them a call.My brother has being sent two tax codes in two seperate letter, both dated the same day, both letters say the company that he is employed with but oe of the letters it states in the notes section that "we know you have another job or pension" which i no he does not have either??

HMRC have been involved in an absolutely disgraceful mess up this year over the issuing of the 2010/11 Tax Codes. They introduced a new software system for the generation of codes and the system simply doesn't work properly. Because of a programming cock-up, the system has forgotten when people have left previous employments and therefore thinks that people have mopre than one job. In normal circumstances, when a person has more than one source of "PAYE Taxable Income", such as another job or a personal pension, then the coding needs to be split between the various sources of income. Obviously, if a person only has one job (which means the vast bulk of people), all their coding should be allocated to that one job.
The awful thing is that HMRC KNEW that there was a problem with new Tax Code generating system but went ahead anyway and issued 25 MILLION codes - many of them wrong. And then they said that the taxpayer and employer MUST use the incorrect coding and it is up to the taxpayer to contact HMRC to inform them of the error HMRC have made.
Absolutely disgracedful behaviour.

You have got to love a system that managed to miss my last job entirely and issue tax codes for employment and JSA at the same time. So the tax man thinks i was unemployed and employed at the same time.
Like one ( Centre one East kilBride ,some fifty years ago , that sent out two advices of code to me and dad) .We both worked for same employer - GPO - ,DAD as postman ,me as telecomms engineer . The addresses were same ,but NI and age were totally different - and showed me -as married ,Dad as single man .My mum had a good laugh ,asking me who my wife was henrycrun said:
sorry just to clarify - should everyone (1,2 or whatever, jobs or pensions) have just one tax code ?
Everyone is entitled to a personal tax allowance each year. For most people this comes to £6,475.For those who pay tax under the PAYE system, the allowance is given to them under the PAYE Coding System. The allowance of £6,475 will appear as a tax code of 647L.
Most people only have one job, so the 647L code is allocated to that one job.
If a person has more than one job, the 647L will be allocated to the main job. This means that all the allowances are used up against the main job and that no allowances are left for allocating against the other job. In those circumstances, the second (and any other job) will receive a Basic Rate or BR code.
If the main job isnt't sufficient to use up the 647L code, any code value left over SHOULD be allocated by HMRC to the second job.
It is this allocation of split codes that seems to have gone awry with the new software HMRC introduced in Jabuary.
