Going down to Bournemouth in a few weeks to see the Rally run on Friday evening down through the park. First time with my 40D and 17-55 lens (I do have a 50mm f1.4 as well)
I assume any action shots are out the window as I dont have a longer lens yet, and well its dark. But I was considering whether it was worth hanging round the start area to get some shots.
Now I have only the pop up flash at the moment which I imagine is not ideal, so would I be right in thinking that a speedlite of somesort is required? Any other tips?

Well, despite the generally bad news about this event the answer to your questions ...I assume any action shots are out the window as I dont have a longer lens yet, and well its dark. But I was considering whether it was worth hanging round the start area to get some shots.

If you could have found a close to 'trackside' position in theory the shorter zooms can get some great shots, at least in daylight. Using flash yuo run the risk of blinding the crew temporarily though careful positioning may minimise their use of anglo saxon.
'Public' locations tend to require at least a 200mm lens.
For flash - yes you need some power. Built-in on camera is very unlikely to hack it. Indeed unless you select the location carefully even a super powerful speedlight may not give you much for the cost of your batteries.
That said it depends a little on the camera and what ISO rating you can shoot at and still get OK results.
