I have moved into a new house and need a phone line, I think the last occupier was with Virgin but is there anyway I can find out who the line is with already or do I just need to get myself a new line?

If there is a line and a box going into your house then all you would need to do is call BT or Virgin up and get the line reconnected - you wouldnt need a totally new line to your house unless you wnated to go with another company

I dunno how you would tell what kind of line you have coming to your house tho

Do you have a big wooden pole with lines going to different houses from the air and then down to your house? if so its probably BT. If the box has a wire going underground its probably Virgin.

Ok, I have a master socket and the phone gets a dialing tone. The main reason I ask is that Virgin say it will take 2 weeks to activate the line and BT arent much quicker.

dial 1470 17070 if you get a voice message chances are it is on the openreach network ,can you dial out on it ? if so ring your mobile from it and see what number comes up . if you can dial the 1470 number but nothing else it is a temporary out of service line with whats called soft dial tone . if its on the openreach network you can get a free reconnection .

sounds like a stopped (temp out of service )line .still try the 1470 17070 as it may well give you the tos number .that could help get the service restored .

quite possibly as its just a software change ,it all depends on whether the line was with a llu service provider .it all gets a little complicated tbh .but as service is all intact it should be a renumber and remove tos ,but bt do have a knack of complicating things (not all of their own making ).

I tried the 1470 number last night, and got the number the line is/was designated for, and a load of diagnostic type options.
I dialled the number the line was designated for from my mobile and it came up as disconnected.
