Evening.

Just having a quick house quandry (mods appreciate you might move this to homes and gardens, but want a bigger view if poss)

How would you feel if you found the 'perfect house' with the only downside being having to park on the road?

I guess a lot of factors here including the area, through traffic, and more importantly what car you drive. If i drove a snotter i wouldnt really be posting this as I wouldnt care. But both my wife and I are car proud, even if they are not that exotic, we take pride in our motors.

Anyway, we have found a really really nice house, that is pretty much perfect in everyway, but we have to park on the road. Its relatively quiet, not much through traffic, but it bothers me. Am i being a ghey? Is the house more important than the parking? I also wanted a drive / garage to have a 3rd car as well, but i guess i could always hire a local council one for that.

Anyone got any experience? constantly fighting for a spot by your house? Car been keyed / knocked whatever?

Should i man up?

I wouldn't have even looked at it with no off street parking.

Massive no-no from me.

As above, I wouldn't have viewed. Although in fairness is it is a through route? Quiet? Few things to consider before?

Can you turn the front garden into a drive?

When i bought my house the main deciding factor was the available parking. I initially wanted a house with a garage but didn't fancy taking out a huge mortgage.

Eventually i settled on a house with enough spaces for 3 large cars on the drive.

Lived in a nice house in a quiet village with on road parking only.

Local kids nicked the MB star off my mums car, walked over the roof of my car, and my partners mirror glass mysteriously vanished.

Be cautious.

We have on road parking, also a 'double' garage- only one car can fit in it realistically

So two cars have to go on the road, yes we have issues, sometimes we find it really easy to park, other times it is a royal PITA to park and can drive around for 10 minutes trying to find something, we can always park out side the garage- but it's at rear of house down a lonely driveway- so not great for security

My car has been keyed- though really not fussed about that as the bodywork is naff anyway

However this house was perfect and we are not bothered overly about the road parking, we got a lot more house for the money due to it's location

I would say look, see what the parking is like, you can always walk away and you will always wonder if you should have looked

It's up to you in the end

But, when i was looking for a house It HAD to have off street parking and room for garage or I didn't look at it as I knew I wanted a garage built eventually

Totally depends on the area I reckon. I've lived at my present address for 2.5 years now and haven't had a problem parking in this manner. I too searched for a house with a drive and a garage and ended up with neither in the end as I happened to really like the house, the area and the road it was on which is incidently fairly quiet too.

Oh, and good luck with renting a council garage. I don't think they are too easy to come by. I used to rent one at my old address (ex council house), when I moved I obviously gave it up and it turned out there was a waiting list for them.

Oh, and I should also add, someone crashed into our old car whilst it was parked outside...

They drove off as well

As far as deliberate damage is concerned, it largely depends on what the area is like and whether your car stands out from others on the road. Off street parking reduces the risk of accidental damage but as long as you're not on a main road you shouldn't be too affected by careless drivers.

I've always parked either on the street or in unsecured residential car parks. In some houses I've been worried about leaving relatively mundane cars on the street; in others I've had no qualms about leaving more exotic stuff lying around.

If you live in a good area and you're not one a popular route home for lots of pub-goers I'm sure it'll be fine.

For what it's worth, none of my cars have ever been accidentally or deliberately damaged.

I live in a terrace house with the only parking be on street, its a pain in the ass and your unlikley to be able to park in front on your own house, I occasionally have to park 20-40m away from my house due to no spaces.

If it doesn't have sufficient parking it isn't perfect thumbup

As above, when we looked we didn't even bother going to see any houses without space for at least 2 cars parked off road. Lived in several flats with limited parking and it was ALWAYS an issue - neighbours being snippy, random damage, etc. Plus I absolutely *hated* coming home from work not knowing if I'd be able to park within 200 yards of home nono

Ended up with a place with off road parking for 3+ cars, since having drive done and garage built now have space for 4 decent sized cars off road plus one in the garage, maybe another small one too! Also, it's a quiet road not near a station or pub and have never had problems parking on the road.

We are lucky as hell - only problem is I can't afford any more cars weeping

I have a double garage and only suffer having to walk 2-3 car lengths further when people visit the seaside at the weekend.

Parking is a BIG priority for me when it comes to buying.

Problem will be on the day when it is pouring down with rain and your tired, and neighbour has decided to park such that they take two spaces.

The you will remember this thread and think hmm I should have held out for at least a drive. Then there is the hassle of the more expensive house has a drive with a shared pathway and neighbour is slowly parking closer and closer to your car.

Then one day you will be washing your P&J and will find a small scuff of paint the same colour as the neighbours car.....

Yes, once lived in a terrace and was constantly fighting for space by house. Car got scraped by kids playing in the street on the first day I had it. Mine never got keyed but all cars parked on my side of the road did. This only happened once and I was lucky because I couldn't get 'my' space that night. On another 'occasion' all the neighbours cars parked on my side also got their doors kicked in. Again this only happened once and again I was lucky. Until someone nicked the boot badges from both our cars when we briefly had two.

Will be moving soon and we won't even be looking at any house if it doesn't have a garage (preferably double) and parking in the drive for at least 2 cars. Previous 2 houses had garages and drives. First house had garage at rear and room for one car beside garage. Before houses we had 2 flats with on-street parking - absolute pain - never again.
