too much oil

I guess you may blow a seal, but then I would have thought that 3/4" is not actually that much. Does it use much oil? How long do you think it will take to get down to normal levels?

I seem to remember someone with more knowledge than me (it could have been Pete Humphries but it might not have been, so don't blame him) who said they slightly overfilled their oil on track days...Not sure if 3/4" counts as slightly over or a lot over.

The rules change slightly with turbocharged cars, but I know my Impreza is sensitive to being slightly over filled. It tends to spray a fine mist of oil into the air intake from the crank case breather. This can drop the octane rating of the fuel, encouraging detonation and generally being a nuisance. I will be fitting a catch can shortly to help deal with this.

Not sure if you're just over or miles over filled. I never go over the maximum with my car now - it sits between min & max and it seems quite happy like that.

The main risk is the oil level getting over the crankcase baffle and getting whisked up by the crank, this would result in oil overheating and lots of oil being blown out the breather. However, I routinely fill to half an inch over the high mark for track days (to prevent oil surge - sometimes the flap valved baffled sump isn't enough on its own), and I've filled it higher than this without any trouble. I wouldn't assume that this is safe for all engines, sumps, dipsticks etc but IMO in a typical TVR RV8 you're probably OK.

the other good thing of course is that at the rate TVR engines use oil it'll only be a few hundred miles before it's down to the correct level anyway..
I would argue there's much more risk of damage from underfilling / not checking than runing over full..
If you're bothered just take it steady for a bit until the level is down to max again ..
