Watching Roger Moore on ITV4, I'm puzzled as to what the Saint actually does. Is he a spy? A policeman? Or does he just drive around in a sports coupe waiting for conspiracies to happen?

It never crossed our minds back in the 1960s how his adventures were funded.

My guess he used the money he got from posing in wolly cardies for Women's Weekly.

In the books (on which the tv is based), ST is a gentleman thief/burgular, robbing and ruining and occasionally killing "bad" people and returning the funds to the wronged people less 10% for himself. Basically Robin Hood taking a percentage.
