Ford Puma or Three Door Mk1 Focus Phase 2
Discussion
Hi,
im getting one of these cars in a couple of weeks time and wanted to know which one you would recommend and why.
I am quite a tall guy and from time to time the car will be fully loaded four up. I also want to improve the ICE a little and so a more "solid car" would be good tp prevent rattling. My first car was a fiesta as much as I loved the car it felt a little too small and not stable enough on the motorway especially on crosswinds. Im afraid the puma as it's based on the fiesta would be pretty much more of the same thing?
anyways i was looking at the 1.7 for the puma and the 1.6 for the focus. one last question does rust affect the focus the way if afflicts the puma?
many thanks in advance!

4 up in a Puma!!! 2+2 in reality.
Tall? You will hit your head getting out of the Puma, due to the shape of the door orifice. Shame because as a drivers car they are superb, ignore all the hairdresser/Girl comments.I have a Puma as a daily runner and a Tamora for weekends, the Puma will give the TVR a run for its money on a bumpy B road.

FWIW, my wife runs a '53' reg 1.6 Focus Zetec. It's a black 3 door car and what I'd call a 'face-lift', i.e. the front indicators are inside the headlamps. I think it's still a good looking car and every time I drive it I'm impressed by it. The steering is really direct and it somehow feels as it really wants to go where you point it. We only put budget tyres on it but it handles way, way better than my '06 Focus Estate daily driver. Her indoors didn't like me moaning about the estate's handling until she was giving it some 'round a local rounabout and it refused to hold a tight line (I won't go into details...). She suddenly realised just how good her car handles in comparison. About the only thing I can criticise about the car is the overly light throttle pedal, but even that is ok compared to the overly servo'ed brakes on the estate car.
Sorry, drifted off topic there!
ETA - I'm 6'2" and have no head-room issues with the Focus.

I have to admit to having had a 1.7 Puma and a number of Foci, All company cars mind.
The Puma was a great little car for zipping about in but totally impractical. I certainly wouldn't have chosen it but unfortunatley I inherited it when I joined the company. I had a hell of a job getting rid of it cos no one wanted it. LOL.
I couldn't fit anything in the boot and the rear seats were none existant even too small for small kids, there's actually a lot more room in the back of a Fiesta (we've got one of those too), the wife loved driving it though.
I had few Foci after that admittedly all estates but from 51 reg onwards 1.8 petrol and 1.8 tdci. The Focus is a much better car and I would go for the tdci over the petrol any day. easily as quick and much more economical. Don't go for the 90bhp tddi though. My Dad's got one of those, won't pull the skin off a rice pudding in comparison.
Diesel will be cheaper road tax too 'cos of lower emmissions.

I'd go for a 1.6 Focus as its not really any slower and its cheaper to tax if you get a newer one.
Also there are many tuning options for the 1.6 sigma engine, its a cracking little motor.
Puma isn't that practical at all, I've got one and came from a Pug 306.
Its a great drive and puts a smile on my face all the time, but they're small.
