Turbo Tyre wear.
Discussion
Guys a quick question on the Turbo/C4S/C4 owners, how long have your front tyres last ?
My cars just done 12k & the front tyres inside edge has
worn nearly smooth although all the main tread is still over 5mm ! The car has been tramlining more since having the rears replaced at 11k, so either they knocked the alignment out during fitting or it's just that the newer tyres exagerating the front wear.
Of course the OPC has suggested a £280 alignment check, but this doesn't make financial sense as a set of new tyres is the same price & I can get 12k out of them.
I was wondering how much more than 12k you guys get from your front tyres, or if there are any better routes to alignement.Obviously if I need new tyres & the car is still tramlining then I will have to have the alignment.
The brake disc's are also having to be drilled, they are currently blocked & overheating, with the amount of brake dust this car generates, I'm not suprised, maybe there is a future for ceramics once the price comes down!
Thanks for any info.

Thanks Toby, will check out Autofarm, it's only my inside "sideway's cuts" (technical term!!) that have worn, the main groves are all fine. The OPC said that the TT's do run "toe in" & will wear more on the inside, but by the sounds of yours my alignment is out..Bugger.
Do me a favour next time you look at your fronts & tell me how your inside "side-cuts" (if I'm making sense) are compared to the outside edge..Thanks

sounds like some degree of mis-alignment Grant...
sadly the best way to extend the life of the discs and to prevent cracks is to periodically remove the accumulated brake dust from the individual holes in the disc with a twist drill. ridiculous and obvious anyone doing such a practice after a high spirited run needs to get a life!!

Daz off the top my head i think it is a 6mm ,,,just hold the drill between your fingers and "twist" the packed brake dust should just fall out...well worth doing before and after a Brunters, ring or trackday excursion.
A bit laborious, maybe worth asking DeR if he can spare one of the household staff for a few hours?

17K is my current record on fronts and still leagal C4S my C2 got 15K. When you get mew tyres Most Tyre fitters can do a basic alignement check for you they have the 996 data on the lazer machine but they dont have the skill to adjust the geomotry(camber, castor, toe in, toe out)but this should tell you if you need a full 4 wheel alignement(negociate it when you buy the tyres).non OPC -G force are good at this and AFN charge £190(Not bad for an OPC)

I know what you mean - I just had look at the fronts on my car and the 'cut's are still very much in evidence on both inner & outer edges & wearing evenly with the rest of the tread - so no evidence that the inner edges are wearing quicker than outer edge.
O/T - I've started to look around for competitive deals on tyres assuming I'll be replacing mine within next 3-4k miles. STS in Slough & the Tyre finder link on PH are offering competitive deals, especaily on fronts (225/40/Z18's) however some suppliers not able to quote the rears (295/30/Z18's)

I usually get a quote from these guys:
www.mytyres.co.uk/
Then use their quote to beat down a local supplier AND fitter on price.

Guilty!!

Actually, with a leccy drill in one hand and pint of beer in the other, I find this quite therapeutic!!
Re the tyres -the fronts always wear on the inner edges.

Errr, but what about that time that you started with 235 holes and ended up with 236 holes, Melv?

Thanks Paul, Daz, Dom, Toby etc.for the input.
The OPC have looked at the wear (checked the tracking & this is ok) & concluded that it is "normal", they are still legal so will run them to my service in April & then get them changed.Micheldever still seem to offer the best prices with a price of £245 including VAT & delivery for both front Conti's.
Toby give them a try on 01962-774437.
I don't really want to mess with the geometry as the car has little or no understeer & I prefer it that way.
The C2 facelift I had used to understeer badly when PUSHED!
With regards to "drilling your own", with my DIY skills I would end up puncturing the tyres & wrecking the suspension, not to mention the discs !!!!

If your car has power steering (and that's for girls, by the way) then twirling the wheel while stationary will wear the inside of the front tyres. Try to make sure you're moving (even slowly) while turning the wheel for parking.
Most tyre joints will do a free 'no obligation' alignment check, which will tell you if your tracking is out to start with - you might not want to trust them to adjust it on a porker tho...
Also if you're a phenomenally tight scottish punter (like me) you'll swap the fronts and rears about halfway through their life, as rears wear on the outside, and fronts on the inside.

This may give interesting results to the bodywork on Grants car. Tyres are 295 width on rears and 225 width on front.

I always thought that excessive toe-in caused wear on the outside edges of the front tyres and toe-out caused wear on the insides.
If the tyres are pointing in towards the centre-line of the car, and travelling forwards, the outside edges bear the brunt of being scraped "sideways" along the road.
Could be wrong, though...

Oh bugger, I didn't realize you were counting Dom. Anyway, more ventilation now......

Take your point on the power steering yer lordship -knackered the fronts on my first car with power steering!!
But, even if the tyres WERE the same size, I don't feel it's a good idea to do this on a high performance car
I did this on an Audi V6 a few years ago and it felt awful!!
The tyres almost seem to suffer from memory effect, in this case 10,000miles or so on the fronts which were used for steering, feeding the power and braking, and the rears just went in a straight line and followed the front, and did a bit of braking -they both had quite different wear patterns.
Personally, I wouldn't do this.
