I have spotted a 997 turbo gear box with very low mileage and from the figures it easily can withold the torque of a LS7 engine. It seems to have oil cooling so would probably be a nice gear box for an ultima. The question is if these modern gear boxes are any different to the old guys we are usually using.
I can imagine that the front wheel drive shaft is only a cosmetic problem because from my understanding the internal gearing has to withold the stress of the whole
torque of the engine and that there is a split between front and back after the gears. Not sure what is happening to 4wd drive boxes if they have no load on the shaft ? But I am sure somebody else has had similar thoughts considering that after the G50/52 all the turbo gear boxes are 4wd .

I have the GT2 box from a 996 so not sure if its exactly the same although suspect it is... one thing to remember is that the box will be inverted so the pump cant just be used as is as it will prob just suck air.

have you got any pics or numbers of the box?

Hi Uwe

I run a 996 turbo box in my Can-Am. Not sure if it's any different than the 997 box. The only issue I had was the internal diameter of the belhousing being smaller than a standard G50. I had to machine mine out in order for the ring gear to fit. All depends on your setup. My clutch, flywheel and ring gear came from Gardner Douglas. My box was custom built by CMS and I am very happy with it. The ratios are perfect for my setup. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together with my new seqential changer from SQS. I hope to have it back on the road next month. I'll post an update on the forum then.

All the best Dave

Hi

It's removed internally and the output blanked off.

mmm see they do cable convertions for mid engine aplications...who said they did not like clunky rod changes???

CMS G50 BILLET SIDE SHIFTER CONVERSION

(all models)

This patent pending design moves the main shift shaft to the side of the transaxle case allowing for a neat and tidy way of attaching shift cables. Perfect for some mid-engine installations and especially where space is limited behind the transmission.

Shift cables can be attached or retrofitted to a variety of shifters including the CMS billet cable shifter.

· $999 (installed price)

· $899 kit price (requires your gear housing and shift shaft)

This is my understanding. It may not be entirely correct.

The 996 GT2 has a G96-88 Transaxle -- 2 wheel drive (Twin Turbo Car as well)
The 996 Twin Turbo has a G96-50 -- All wheel drive. As Dave pointed out forward facing output shaft is blocked off for the Ultima.

I know for sure that the G96-88 is a cable shifter. I have a G96-88 in my GTR (Not an expensive solution). Not sure about the G96-50, but I think it is cable shifter as well?

I agree CMS is the way to go.

I have a rebuilt 996 Turbo G96-50 cable shifted six speed transaxle,
with taller 1st gear in my GTR.
Shifting is very easy and enjoyable.

I like CMS I have thier side shifter and billet gear selector. Works very well, BUT I have said this before, until they change the side to side rod on the back of thier side shifter to something besides a set screw on a polished round shaft I suggest any of you intrested in this setup contact them and voice your well founded concearns about a crappy piece of engineering on an otherwise great product with excellent service.
