And I don't mean the naff ones with mis-placed letters or coloured screws to try and spell a word or a name.

What's the problem?

Dunno about everyone else, but I think they're a bit tacky. Why have your name on your car? Would you walk around with your name on a tshirt?

Each to their own I guess.

I think they can, finish a car off nicely.

IMO.

I've got a modestly priced one (UF02DAN) and don't see what harm it does? Most people I know have had a chuckle at it for various reasons but I've never heard anybody make a negative comment about havin it in the first place.

In fact, I'm probably going to stick it on the C1 for irony value.

Because if you want something written in the back of your car you could just go to a graphics shop and get anything you want printed for about £5 instead of a tacky mispelling that costs £250-£230k

Also whats the point of an 'ageless' plate except for sheer vanity BS keeping up with the Jones puroposes.

It's a government issued ID for a car, you wouldn't get a personalised post code or NI Number would you?

While I probably wouldn't be bothered to get one for myself I can't say I hate them (unless they are heavily illegally bodged to "work") - realistically it's each to their own.

It depends on the car and the plate

I don't hate them. Can look good - I personally especially like the ones that refer to the car they're on (D14BLO, etc).

Having said that I saw a Range Rover this morning with 10L on it. rolleyes

Mine is not mis-spaced or a mis-spelling and it's a standard format plate that will only make newer cars look older than they are.

What is wrong with me spending the money I have worked for on something that I can keep from vehicle to vehicle for as long as I wish?

The vanity argument against, you could use that from anything from non-standard alloys to metallic paint or even the choice of car in the first place.

They sometimes come with the car. Why spend money to get rid of them?

Indeed. Mine was on the car from the 1st day of registration as far as I can tell. All the previous owners left it there, and I'm planning to as well (unless I scrap the car and get an M5...).

a topic I have never understood when it comes to the UK - You can get D14BLO but you can't get DIABLO - is that correct?

hehe

Because it has to fit the standard format.
L = Letter 5 = number

LL55 LLL
L555 LLL
LLL 555L
Or older formats that allow A 1 or 1 A.

I wouldn't say I hate them, I couldn't care less what other people spend their money on. I don't really understand why anyone would bother, though.

Snap.

My cars came with personalised plates anyway, no other car has the same ones (hopefully!).

To me that just seem like a big waste of money. Why spend in excess of £300 for a number plate that doesnt really add anything to the care (in my opinion). Money could be much better spent put towards more worth while upgrades.

Actually, some of the fine, upstanding people of Windsor are trying to get a different postcode prefix to their current SL for Slough one. rolleyes
