I gig my Les Paul Std through a Blackstar Series One 45, playing mainly rock and heavy rock. I'm thinking of replacing the LP ... as gorgeous as it sounds, damn it's a heavy beast and not very comfortable to wear (particularly on the RH forearm, and virtually impossible to play comfortably at home lounging on the sofa !)

I'm looking round for a strat style (shape, i.e. more curvy, contoured) type of guitar, but something with a lot more beef to it (i.e. buckers instead of single coils ... my USA strat sounds way too weedy through the Blackstar). Price range of around £1k to £2k. Oh, and I prefer hardtails, and visuals (something nice looking) plays a big part for me.

My current preference is erring towards PRS, but I thought I'd poll PH for any other suggestions, maybe something I'd not considered .... ?

Cheers !

A worthy suggestion, but I was looking for another manufacturer really smile So that also rules out flying V's etc ....

After playing gibsons for years, I recently got myself a PRS.....and I have to say I think it is by far and away superior!!....I always had the impression that PRSi were doctors/lawyers/collectors guitars.....but then I tried one and the tone and quality shone through!!!....I would suggest you go fir the best singlecut you can afford .....try and get one with the 58/08 or 59/09 pickups in it .......will make your LP sound weedy in comparison :-).......am I doing a hard enough sell?......for more info get over to birdsandmoons.com

Proper Les Paul ? Being a historic reissue. They should be ALOT lighter or at least they are from my experiences, especially '59s but if not light enough maybe look at a PRS singlecut ?

After years of playing LP replicas, then "proper" Les Pauls, I moved to a PRS about 6 years ago. Dual cutaway, non-trem, 2xhumbuckers.

Have never looked back!

Put some mini humbuckers on the Strat and clamp the tremolo?

What about a Gibson SG? Or a Telecaster custom?

Awsome PRS, After a few years of collecting i have gone down the PRS route, Bought a Custom 22 and i have to say all around that its the best guitar i have owned, pure quality! So that has led to the second one!!! Number 2 is a Sunburst 245 (singlecut) with those sweet sounding 57/08's!!! Number 3 is in the offing depending on a bit of trading in and its the pick of the bunch! Limited run of 10 shoot out Macarty's for headline music, Private stock top with 57/08's and has been given the 20 points of tone (pauls recipe for perfect tone!), normally reserved for endorsee's!

Which neck profile did you go for??? Mine are all wide fat as i really like the more full sound.

I think if you check it out guitar guitar have paul coming over in april to do some seminars! i am off to the world guitar event near stroud.

Well i hope you enjoy you new toy!

You made the right choice. As much as I love my Gibson historics, PRS is the way to go for gigging guitarits.

I'll tell you one guitar that never seems to get mentioned that is very under-rated,Yamaha sg1000,if you can get a 70,s or 80,s one.Far more versatile guitar than Les Paul or Strat, plus you can get both of those guitar's sounds out of it!

Give the OP a break! smile The high-end Yammie SGs are lovely but VERY heavy, giving a Norlin LP a good run for its money.
