I've been working for my company for around 20 months in total, with the past 8 being full time. Until recently, my job consisted of a various mish-mash of sales, marketing, business development and various other projects. The work was coming from around 4 or 5 sources - Sales Coordinator, Business Development Manager and both Directors. I was more or less left alone to get through the work as I saw fit, as long as the results were there. It did start to become quite trying at times as I was being pulled in so many different directions, but the experience, knowledge and insight into different areas of the business was great.

Recently, a Training Needs Analysis was conducted and the end result is a bit of restructuring and the creation of a new Marketing Department consisting of the ex Office Manager (who has little marketing experience) and myself (I also have limited real marketing experience, but more academic experience). She now has the title of Marketing Manager, and I am Marketing Executive.

Today, we had our first meeting as a Marketing Department, and she made it quite clear that she was in charge of the department and that she was the one responsible for the creation of the marketing strategy etc.

Now, if she was an experienced marketer who I could learn from and grow under, I would be delighted. But the fact that she has no more marketing experience, or obviously greater marketing skill than me grates me somewhat. I'm not warming to the idea that we are both essentially tasked with the creation of a marketing department and marketing processes however any success falls at the feet of the Manager, whether it originated from her or not.

What would you do in this situation?
