When visiting friends (whether for the weekend or an evening) would you take some wine/chocolates/flowers etc for the hosts or go empty handed?
Personally I was always brought up to take some gifts for the hosts and that also goes for just visiting for dinner. We have friends who pitch up bringing nothing, eat everything in sight, drink loads of booze, dont help and leave the rooms like they are waiting for the maid to arrive, this really does my head in.

Definitely take something. I always offer to wash up too, or at least help with clearing the dinner table.

Always bring booze, and flowers if you want to have a sex on the lady of the house when the boyfriend is asleep/ doing a poopy.

Having said that, I would expect to be properly fed, and I would certainly never "help".

I do not go to other people's house to skivvy around, "washing up" or what have you.

Nor would I expect others to "help" at Peachy Towers.

If they offered, I would refuse.

They are my guests, after all.

My wife always volunteers as well, but i know deep down she is hoping they decline her kind offer.

I suppose if they allow you to do the same on an equally regular basis then it's not too bad.

Generally we take a bottle of wine or flowers when eating with friends but it can all get a bit out of hand if you're not careful - my parents insist on bringing all manner of gifts with them, which makes us feel guilty and take ever increasing amounts of stuff to theirs, which makes them feel guilty, etc, etc.

I always take a bottle plus something else like chocolates or scented candles - of which I keep a stock. Space NK sales are great for this.

+1 Always bring something, as they don't have to have you round, even if it's only a token gesture like a bottle of wine.

For God's sake don't take scented candles.

Good grief, you may as well take a buttplug in the shape of Graham Norton.

I get away with it on the basis that I am female.

We always bring a bottle of wine and sometimes a nice single malt.

Really not bothered if they bring anything. Most of my friends have questionable taste in wine and their taste in anything spelled w-h-i-s-k-y (as opposed to "whiskey") is none existent.

Wife always offers to help with the cleaning up. As I am a smoker (yes a rarity I know - Dunhills in the blue box only please), I am usually the only one with a lighter when the inevitable (contraband) cubans are offered after dinner and the men retire outdoors while the women natter and fill the dishwasher.

Yes. My life doesn't suck.

I always take cake - cupcakes, chocolate cakes, tray bakes anything of that sort. Unless they don't like cake, but I don't associate with strange people like that.

I agree.

The g/f and I are always going round to peoples and will always take something with us, or the full on wine, chocs and flowers if staying over.

So far as helping tidy up etc i would 99% of the time be taking my glass or cup out into the kitchen when getting up or such like and will offer to help out washing up, although i do secretly hope the reply will be no, no you just relax there and we'll sort all that out wink

Always take something - bottle of wine for him, flowers, fancy candle, bath bombs or chocs for her. It's terribly clichéd really, but it would leave a sour taste if you didn't!

In the old days we used to have a party every weekend, taking it in turns to host it.

So we had 1 bottle of wine that just kept getting handed around, and never opened. smile
