Buying a Tuscan with Cat D damage???

Have just seen a beautiful Tuscan with 8K on the clock,in overall good condition, but with Category D damage which was repaired professionally. Looked at the car and it looks great - can't spot where the work was done unless you look closely and the owner is being very upfront about everything, showed photos of damage etc. Anything I should consider before taking the plunge?
Its got to be really cheap and expect to have problems
when you try to dispose, the Trade will stand it in at 1/2 the price of a sraight car Also make sure you can get it insured some companies wont insure Cat C/D cars IIRC i know it sounds tempting ultimatley the decision is yours. Tony

You say it's been repaired professionally but in th same breath say you can't see it unless you look closely. Depending on what the damage was, I wouldn't expect to see ANY evidence of body damage on a GRP car if I was buying it - even a CAT D one.

Not sure how true this is but I have been informed by a TVR dealer that if the Tuscan has been classed as a Cat C or D then TVR bin all the history file on the car and will not supply any parts for that car. Say you had a small accident and you needed a new front bonnet then the dealer would ask for the chassis No to enable you to order it, if you gave the correct chassis no for the car they would then refuse to sell you the car part.
Dont take my word for it but I was informed by a dealer.

Don't know about letting you have parts but they definately won't let you have the history!

There are LOADS of threads on Cat D/C damage.
Rule of thumb is 20/25% off normal price.
If in doubt get it certified by Autolign for £250. They will then certify and indicate on insurance register that it is A-ok.
Never heard of any insurance companies not touching Cat Ds.
... unless of course Tuscans are totally different rules, which is always possible?

Interesting stuff. And yes raceboy - that's the one. Price is good and at around 20% less than it would for a straight car. The autoalign tip was a good one - will definitely check it out. I'm expecting to sell the car privately when it comes down to it. The parts / history question is the worrying part. It's always going to be a gamble but at the price may be worth it. Any of you heard about the EFI warning light coming on in heavy rain / jetwash before? Many thanks for the information all.

I have asked around previously about a Cat C Griff and all that which burriana says is right.
If it has been repaired correctly, it should be in a better condition than a similar aged/miles no crashed car. Getting the paintwork and body to look right is probably the most expensive single cost you will incurr. If you can see the damage, don't buy or factor that into you price. With a Cat D car, getting Autolign to inspect the car, is probably better value than the AA or anybodyelse to inspect it.

I suspect the cheeky bar steward would prefer you to buy a car off them You won't get any history unless the previous owner left it in the car (the insurance company nick it usualy) but it's what happens after the accident that's important, ie profesional re-build and subsequent history. I would assume that under 12,000 miles the car will have been dealer serviced anyway (I can't see someone buying a £40k car and then not getting it's first service done)
Pay between 65% and 75% of book. The longer you keep it the better value it is
