Darn - that's just up the road from me - an Ultima with a 360 motor would sound as good as it looks.

I think a blown LS1 is probably a more sensible option both for ease/expense of service - not to mention purchase.

It'd sound glorious though.

Symbolic motors is just down the road from my office so service could be done there for a price....

An Ultima with a SBC V8 sounds as good as it looks too!

Maybe I'm getting old but the 360s, Ford and Lexus V8s were pretty hard to tell from the LS6s at Daytona the other week. I can understand wanting to put in a V10 or V12 to get a different sound but one V8 sounds pretty much like another to me even with slightly different firing orders.

Blimey! I think you need to visit a hearing specialist. I SAID I THINK YOUR HEARING MAY NOT BE QUITE RIGHT
NOTHING sounds like a Ferrari V8, due to firing order, valve count, rev range, exhaust design etc. In fact I'd suggest this may be the best sounding engine in the world with a couple of exceptions (Zonda, McLaren F1).

I can only agree !
I'm only a wanna bee so far. Planning to start a build around sept-oct this year.

Currently driving Alfa Romeos, and have a lovely sounding 3 liter V6.

I can probably score some Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati powerplants,
but considering initial and running for costs for those engines an upgraded AR V6 to 3.5 or 3.8 at AH Motorsports is highly likely as well.

Just listen to this...

We'll just have to agree to differ. Though I recommend you compare a race SBC or LS6 with a similarly tuned Ferarri V8 sometime.

If I wanted a car to sound like a Ferrari, I'd buy one.

Besides, it would mean going slower

The ONLY reason a Ferrai sounds like a Ferrari is the flat plane crank. Basically the engine fires as if two 4 cylinder engines were mated together.
I actually thought about having a flat plane (also called single plane) crank for an LS1, just to be different. I guess I could simply play with the firing order for a little different sound.

BTW, a think that Ferrari V8 sounds better than ANY V12, except maybe a Ferrari V12

TVR Cerbera has a flat plane crank, but it just sounds like a bag of spanners being dropped downstairs

Well, until the oil's warm at least

I think the Esprit V8 also has a flat planed crank but the sound is nowhere near as good as a Ferrari - and it has nothing to do with the turbos (as an F40 demonstrates so well)...

Hi Doc

I understand yr opinion but i think the porche V10 sound at least that great
also the Aston Vanguish sound is superb

so you dont need a ferrari to have a great sound

and the ferrari is looking at reliabilaty not to compare to the porsche even the costs ands availabilaty of spare parts

Not quite true I'm afraid, the Cerbera and Esprit V8's both have flat plane cranks and sound very different indeed to the Ferrari unit. The Ferrari's exhuast and header design almost certainly play a big part as does the valve count (5v per cyl as opposed to 2 in the AJP V8). Not sure about the lack of reliability comments - everything I've heard suggests the V8 in both the 355 & 360 are nigh on bulletproof. Still not right for an Ultima though.

Doc, I have to disagree. As beautiful as the ferrari v8s sound, they have nothing on a 7L jag v12

All alloy Jag V8 has more torque than standard V12. Sounds good in my Ultima Spyder too. Mine liberated from a David Seaman shunt.

If anyone has the Sun headline, "SEAMAN SPUNKS JAGUAR", will pay modest fee.

It' right that it is the 180degree crank that make Ferraris sound.
Regarding a flatcrank in a ls1 engine, it is not that simple. Of course you need a diffrent fireing order and a diffrent camshaft. But you probably will need som kind of balanceaxles so your engine dont shake apart.

It is 44% (if I remember it right) more vibrations in a flatcrank V8 than a inline 4....

A lexus/toyota 1uzfe will do me fine. There is nothing like a v8-v12 up above 9k rpm. You can keep your chevy smallblocks with their 6.5k redlines

The lower revving SBC produces lower frequency sound.
Low frequency sound waves travel further bringing the highly enjoyable sound to a wider audience.
