Does anyone know what would be needed ( apart from some serious chemistry knowledge ) to recreate this substance ?

(AlN)x.(Al2O3)1-x, mole fraction 0.30 ≤ x ≤ 0.37

Aluminium oxynitride (AlON) is a transparent ceramic composed of aluminium, oxygen and nitrogen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_oxynitride

im just really curious about it... and the fact that its so damn expensive!

I had the idea of transparent steel years ago. You just need to alter the molecular structure so that photons pass through it. After all, they can get through an inch of glass quite happily.

Still working on it. Every time I think I've done it, it shatters.

Given that it is only $10 square inch, its surprising watch makers don't use it for marketing value alone for the watch face....

Is that the stuff that has glassfibre built into it? Really cool. Saw some brilliant uses of it in an architectural exhibition a few years ago.
