blob eye sti with ppp, buying help
Discussion
hi guys.
i am in the process of ditching my bmw 330 convertible after only 4 months as we just don't get on.
now i have been looking at a couple of cars but one really has, a black 53 plate blob eye sti with full ppp pack for £10200, its from a subaru main dealer it has 50k on the clock and has fssh with one owner, do you think it is over priced?
also what are the reliablity like on such car as im worried about walking into a big bill even though the dealer offered me a 1 year warrenty.
my 330 needs servicing evey 12-15k and its about £220 a inspection 1 and £650 a inspection 2 i avrage between 23 and 26 mpg but this is 80% legal motoerway driving with the odd blast although im giving my driving like a granny.
will the subaru be much more expensive to run than that?
also i have been told its a 305 bhp and will do 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds and 0-100mph in about 11 is this correct and also what are the limits on the tuning front without going far enough to make it un reliable?
are the brakes decent on the blob eye sti's as i know the early classic cars had weak brakes.
will the car need 98 ron petrol as i got fed up with putting that in my r34 skyline but guessing it a UK CAR I SHOULD BE OK?
what would it compare running cost and perfromace wise with the other cars i looked at
astra vxr
lotus elise 111r
focus st
civic type r new shape?
do they also have adjustable center diffs?
do they tend to understeer or is oversteer obtainable?
many thanks for reading and i know its a stupidly long post.

If you're buying from a main agent, get them to put a years proven warranty on it. That'll be 600 quid recouped from the ticket price. At 50K it should have had it's belt service done. If it hasn't get them to do it, that's another 500 odd quids worth recouped (effectively). The bug eye / blob eye STI will tend to understeer, but you can counter this by adjusting your driving style. That is to say, if you were on a track, flicking the car into the bends a bit more than you normaly would will counter the natural tendancy to understeer on the exit. The DCCD is a nice toy but not strictly needed. I have had an STI with the DCCD and now have a GB270 without, and although I liked the DCCD it's no great shakes not having it. Running costs are not as bad as everyone who has never actualy had a scoob will try and tell you. It is adviseable to use 98 or higher RON fuel with a car running a PPP. The Acceleration on the packed STI takes some getting used to if you've not driven a performance car before. That is to say you will find yourself closing people down on roundabouts and motorway slip roads much more than you intend to at first. They are a lot of fun and as long as you stay below 400 BHP should be very reliable as well.
thanks for the input guys.
i have done a search and can't really find any other car like this from a main dealer for this price and trade cars are about £500 less but with alot less come backs if it does break.
i am used to high powered cars ranging from high powered rwd skylines and quick fwd cars and the bmw is nippy but i haven't had a out and out fast 4wd car before so are they still play full?
if i do 70 mpg on the motorways do you think 25-26mpg is achivable?
also what sort of cost would it be to maybe getting to 350-380bhp?
if stuff does break is it expensive to repair like my bmw isor not really and are they robust?
basicly i need a car that won't breakdown or cost loads in repair and will throw me back in my seat when needed and take conners well too but not being very silly on price.

i have been looking at the sti's and one has really cought my eye.
it is a 04 plate sti wr1! 60k on the clock and its 13k.
do you think the extra's you get from a wr1 and the fact its 1 year newer warrent the 2k price hike?
i am interested also on how the wr1 is so much faster and pretty much the fast producton sti made?
i was thinking of tuning the sti with the ppp pack but really you would be throwing all the ppp pack away when you do this and your never get the value of the mods back where as the limited edtion car would hold its money better?
also im not keen on the blue inserts on the normal sti seats and feel the colour of the body work and interior is less chavy and better suited than black with blue interior?
is dccd really worth it as i have always had rwd cars and like the idea of making the car act like its rwd if i feel like it or is it a gimick?
thanks guys

Alright mate
For 13k you can get STI with hardly any miles. Unless you realy really want the WR1 get a low mileage STI. No probs with reliability. Am on my 2nd blob eye STI and touch woood, no probs, and servicing is cheap compared to BMW. If you can, go for the PPP, massive difference over standard car.
The other cars you mention do not compare, I drove the VXR and its a bit of a pig to be fair and the ST is slow in comparison. The Elise is awesome but no good if you need rm in a car.
A standard STI will understeer, but for the money you are talking you can get the adjustable diff on a later model which will oversteer if you bias the back.
Cheers

The main issue for me with the WR1, is the fact it's got the 2001-2004 centre console. Other than that it's pretty good. I love the icelle blue colour and the stock rims look the dogs. They also have the DCCD which is a toy I really miss. You won't cure the inherent understeer characteristic by winding the DCCD to open but if you chuck the car about a bit more than normal and have the DCCD set to open that will do it.
the main thing is i want to get a car from a main dealer as i have had problems in the past with traders and privately bought cars and i really want peace of mind and it really must have a years warrenty.
i love the colour of the wr1 and also the bacl interior over the blue inserts but im happy to add extra power to a normal sti ppp if thats the batter way forward.
i just doubt i will get uprated suspension, a power boast, nicer interior, dccd for 2k more than the normal sti with ppp, also the black sti has the 18" wheel upgrade but i don't like gold wheels so it will cost me money to have them sprayed black.
the other option is to find a decent trader in berkshire or surrey who i trust but i really don't think i will find that.

If you want a nice scooby look at the JDM STi.. These are Jap imports, they have a lot more to offer than the UK versions. have a look at Lichfied imports. i love the colour of the wr1 and also the bacl interior over the blue inserts but im happy to add extra power to a normal sti ppp if thats the batter way forward.

hi,
i have test driven the black sti with ppp and it was a really nice car to drive, it was more comfy than my bmw which was a shock i must say, it was fast even thought not quite as quick as i thought it would be it still very caperble car and still loads of scope for even more performance.
i have given up on the idea of a wr1 as i have only just relised after talking to the subaru service team it needs servicing every 4.5k and the services are atleast £120 more than a normal sti with ppp and more fragile suspesion cou;d be costly.
the car needed a couple of bits like prodrive center caps replacing, a new battery, re badging, little dents taken out and maybe new rear tyres. but it comes with a years subaru warrenty and a full mot also he said he will change the gold wheels to what ever colour i like as i don't like the gold. he gave me a ok price for my car but its 11k this car so for a 53 plate sti ppp with 56k on the clock seams a bit high in price?
also i need to haggle a 60k service off them as its a £700 service off them and its only got 3.5k untill its due.
what do you guys thingk? is it a ok deal or should i carry on looking?

I'm surprised that the WR1 needs any additional (more frequent servicing) than a standard STi? They're nothing more than a badge (colour) special.. No different to a PPP STi in essence.i have test driven the black sti with ppp and it was a really nice car to drive, it was more comfy than my bmw which was a shock i must say, it was fast even thought not quite as quick as i thought it would be it still very caperble car and still loads of scope for even more performance.

That seems a bit high to me. A friend recently bought an 06 STi PPP with a load of options for around £13K with 1000 miles on the clock. I also recently sold a Spec C with 15K for £15K.. You should be able to pick up a blob for around 10K with similar or less miles. Maybe not through the dealers though. I guess though if you get all the niggles sorted and get them to throw in the big service for that sort of money then.... Well that's not too bad (still a bit high IMO)
It doesn't take much at all to get them to 'feel' quick, the usual De Cat exhaust, filter, pump and remap should free up a few ponies without an reliability issues and if done by the right person will improve MPG (Get it mapped on normal fuel not Super)
If your in no rush then in all honesty keep looking as there are plenty of cars out there...
the main problem i have is i have been burnt to many times with cars and have had massive bills up to 3k in matter of months and even traders have wriggled out of them where i feel more confident subaru main dealer would be better but im not sure lol.
it is a bit over priced but i haven't seen any for the prices you have shown me. the other problem is i need to px my bmw where if i buy private i can't do that and i don't trust smaller firms so much

i have ditched the idea of buying the black sti ppp as i look back on it it was in a rough state and had dents all over it and badly refurbed wheels and it was de bagged and just looked like it had been abused and its miles over priced. im not looking at wr1's now as im not servicing it every 4500 miles thats a joke.
i am tempted to just keep the bmw now but it would be good if there was a decent subaru dealership with a decent cars but sgt toplow just had either brand new cars or ropey one. i don't know where the nearest dealership is appart from that, also the top tech guy there didn't know any specs on most the cars and throught the wr1 had a massive twin scroll turbo on it and loads of extra's like bigger intercooler and so in where all it actually has is a sports cat and a remap over tha ppp pack.
im not keep on a import as the insurance is a joke as well.
