Whine in 4th + 5th gear, goes when clutch depressed

As title. Car is Evo 6. Anything obvious to look at?

Gearbox bearings most likely. Uprated ones are available I think.

You could ask on MLR, but more than likely bearings as Dave says.

Is it definately only 4th and 5th ?

Not my car, just one I tempted to buy.

I guess its one of those things that could be cured straight away or could take much more investigation....

So is that a £2-300 job for the bearings from an indie?

I suggest you ask one but I doubt it. More like that much just to remove and refit gearbox plus a box rebuild by a specialist plus new oil. Maybe also worth doing the clutch while it's apart if there's any wear. No point doing that again later. I'd be guessing closer to £750 even without the clutch.
