Not really that helpful when the base-station requires a power supply and the OP has said there is none near his phone socket.

I've had numerous caller ID phones and they have all been battery powered, except for the cordless ones.

OP said the kitchen phone socket, implying that he may well have more than one socket...

There are a few battery powered ones, but they get through batteries like no tomorrow.

But you still need to power the base station, which has to be next to the phone socket.

You can only have battery power, as their is not enough power from the telephone line itself.

You would be changing the batteries weekly if it was cordless.

Pretty sure this doesn't need a power supply:

You are quite correct, it doesn't.

Yes can vouch for that as we have one. Needs batteries (AA if I remember correctly)but draws power from the phone line. Another one to look at is the Binatone Speakeasy 5 which I slightly prefer.
Also note that it has caller NAME as well as number. A lot of phones say they have caller display but only display the incoming number which is useless unless you can carry a load of them in your head. Obviously the name won't appear if you haven't set it up in your personal directory.

Taking another look at the original problem can the phone socket be extended via a plug-in extension to somewhere nearer a power point? If the master of a pair of DECT phones is placed where there is power and a phone point the slave(s) can be put anywhere within reach of a power point. In our house the most used phone is in the kitchen which is actually the slave to the lesser used DECT master phone in the spare bedroom upstairs. The bedroom has a phone socket, the kitchen doesn't. (Unlike a conventional extension there can be problems trying to use phones in a DECT set-up simultaneously.)

Caller ID also needs to be activated on the line. Pretty sure this is the case for resi.

EDIT: Rest doesn't matter as I didnt read the thread properly.

How about you just buy some socket extension cable? Can't be that difficult?

I have the phone shown above. It's cheap, I bought it because it has big buttons (useful in the kitchen), caller ID, and it runs on AAs. The hands free is useful as well.

I would miss this if it was taken away, it does exactly what it says on the tin. I put new AAs in about once a year.

It does need to be activated, but is free as it's called something else or similar these days.. I just activated it online for free when I registered our phone bill to be handled online.
