Right after my last laptop fried from a defective gpu Im in need of a new one.
Was just wondering how difficult would it be to build your own, has anyone built their own laptop?

Ive built several desktops but I bet a laptop is a different ball game. Can see trouble getting hold of some parts.
Anyone know of any suppliers?

What custom bits are you expecting to spec up.
Most of the big companies allow you to customise cpu, ram, gpu etc
Also depends on how much you want to spend.
Personally I cant see the advantage of self building a laptop.

Depends how much you want to spend. As said by other poster most will build to your spec to a fair degree however rock will build to as close to you r spec as possible and unlike most other laptops most components are very interchangeable.

I have an alienware however after all the issues i have had with it wouldnt recommend them. Bonus of my laptop has been i have fitted a new graphics card and will be fitting a new processor as well.

Yeah had a proper look into it. With the current cost of most laptops it would only be worth it cost wise if you were after a seriously custom spec, which I'm not.

I guess its the same case for custom built desktops, few years back you could build one for cheaper than market price. Now you cant even get close to the price of a Dell if you wanted to build one yourself.

Although good to know there are now options out there should you wish to build your own laptop. Ocz do a diy laptop and Im sure a few other manufacturers do barebone systems.

Love the look of those Alienware systems but they do have a hefty price tag with them. Have you seen the new Origin laptop made by the ex-execs of aliemware starting price of about $5000.

Ill probably wait till Sony update the new AW series vaios. Their rgb led screens are supposed to be best on the market.

buy something which is popular and goes up to a good spec eg Dell Latitude/XPS and buy only what you need, then later on buy better parts off ebay and upgrade yourself if needed.

Amir problem is that with a lot of mainstream dell etc they are very difficult to upgrade or fix if they go wrong. My laptop g card died and it was as easy as removing the back plate and then removing the 6 screws holding the card in place and pulling it out and slotting in the new one. A lot of mainstream laptops the card is built into the board meaning if it goes pop you have yourself a paperweight.

yes but its the next best case scenario if a popular model then spares will always be available, for example on ebay you will always see laptops with broken screens or dead batteries etc etc and you could potentially slot the board/cpu into yours as the dell configurator allowes the choice of cpu etc

I have a m1530 and if went bust would google the issue as a popular model so has foums, then take a chance on a faulty one/someone parting out, I bought the best available at the time so keeping it a long time as should be up on performance for years to come. If you get something too niche then will have to go to the manufacturer- £££'s.
