Hopefully this is the correct forum to post in.

I need some digging done in my garden and some painting done in the house and a few other odd jobs done.

I am going to get my mates son in who is 21yrs old and unemployed.

So whats the going rate for a days unqualified labour?

£20. Beggars can't be choosers!

Cheaper to make an anonymous phonecall to the Police regarding the "buried body".....

No more than £50, in fact a bit less perhaps.

Ask him what he will do it for. Then knock him down on the price on the basis that you will provide tea and biscuits.

If you want to be 'fair' £50 cash in hand would be about right.

I wouldn't let an unemployed 21yr old paint my house!

£40 for a day of labouring I reckon.

Have you borrowed Gordon Brown's calculator? It's £19,500 on mine! Still not £30K even if you add back the government's share to get to a gross figure.

Is just under a tenner an hour really too much for some hard labour?

I did say about £30k - fair enough its actually nearer £26k grossed up. If you are paid cash the implication is you are not going to declare it.

Nah - you're right, it's hardly any money to most.

Min wage + £1. With a bonus on results. Min wage + £1 = about £50/day. If he's good, you could bung another £25 on top.

I'd charge him for the job rather than by the hour. Dig a bit yourself, time it, add about 50% of time as you'll be quicker to start compared to when you get knackered and calculate from there.

Alternatively pay him to drive a hired big rotavator around for a day.
