Confusing! SMG first appeared on the E36 M3. Then SMGII came along on the E46 M3 in 2001 and later SSG appeared on the lesser models. Then they renamed the SSG to SMG! However the SMGII systems on the M3 were not the same as the SSG/SMG systems on the 330 and below - completely different manufacturer so different hardware & software.
The SMGII, on the E46 M3, is unique to the E46 M3.
The SSG/SMG on the lesser models is more closely related to the original SMG found on the E36 M3. And it's cak.

Used to have an M3 SMG, have driven a 330 SSG. Difference is night and day - SSG blows. Owners say otherwise but still...
You can get a Z4 with SSG (branded SMG) too.

You can get a Z4 with SSG (branded SMG) too.
I was valuing a 2.5 Z4 that had "smg" but I was sure that it was SSG.
The above posts clear that up for me.
