"Car conga" protest over Wessex Way 40mph speed limit.
ANGRY motorists are planning a “car conga” along the Wessex Way road in protest at the 40 mile per hour speed limit.
A Facebook group, named “Stop the Wessex Way 40mph Madness”, has gained support from over 8,000 people who describe the new speed limit as “pure madness”, “stupid” and “totally inappropriate”.
The group has organised the protest, which takes place this Sunday from noon.
About 60 motorists have signed up to take part in a slow convoy along the Wessex Way, although organisers say numbers on the day should be much higher
Steven Old, a professional chauffeur who has organised the protest, said: “I have spoken to the police and we have made agreements on the terms of the protest to make sure it is safe and legal.
“As we will be with a police convoy, we will be able to drive slower than the speed limit and not face prosecution for dangerous driving.
“I think the new speed limit is ludicrous. The idea for this protest was suggested on the Facebook group.
“There were some more militant ideas, but we don’t want to upset anyone more than we have to. We are doing the protest on Sunday so we do not affect people going to work.”
A Dorset Police spokesperson, said: “It is the police’s intention to facilitate a safe and lawful protest and ensure delays to the general public are minimised.”
He added that police vehicles would accompany any convoy along the Wessex Way.
A petition on the Number 10 website has gained 126 signatures to urge the government to force Bournemouth council to change the speed limit back to 50 miles per hour.
The speed limit on Wessex Way was dropped from 50 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour in January for a six-month trial in a bid to reduce the number of accidents on the road.

Big reaction, eh...
If anyone knows this road, it's a completely segregated dual carriageway. 50 feels slow, 40 is even worse.
Here's a petition to object:
