Route required: From east coast to west coast

Hi folks,

I'm sure this has been asked many a time before but the search facility is down so thought I'd post the question...

A friend and I are spending a few days in the IoM in August with our respective SWMBO's. We are planning to sail back into Heysham in Lancashire and then travel East to Whitby before heading for home back down south.

we will probably spend the first night in the North Yorks Moors and then the next night nearer Whitby, but need a good driving route to join up the dots.

This is where I hope you guys and girls can help, we're looking for some great driving roads for us boys and some lovely scenery for the girls, what do you suggest?

Whilst in the IoM we'll be staying at the Mount Murray Hotel, looks nice so we're hoping it lives up to it's website

Just outside of Whitby is Cross Butts hotel and stables. Nice big carpark and excellent food.
