Seeing as Ive got to rebuild the brake slave and master cylinder with new seals, I might aswell not mess about, and do the calipers too!

The car currently dives violently to the left on heavy braking so Im assuming the front left is sticking on or the front right is seized off? either way they need some attention!

The only markings on the existing front calipers are 'TYCO TYPE 1' from what I can see.
Any ideas if these are standard?
Am I right in thinking they are off of a ford granada so they should be easy to refurb with new seals and the like, or will it be just as simple to replace with some new items?
The discs look good on the front, but the back ones have seen better days and Ill need to change them.
I also assume the rears are from a jag (xj6?)so again, a seal kit shouldnt be too hard to find.

Any opinions welcome.

Stu....please put what wedge you've got on your profile ...then forgetful old people like me don't have to try to remember what model it is. wink

280 ?

I believe the original front discs, pads and calipers were off the Granada MK2 saloon, whereas the vented type (with which my 280 had been fitted) were off Granada MK2 Estate.

Rear set-up is from XJ6/12 Jags from the early 80s.

These parts may still be available through auto factors, as long as you supply the correct part numbers.
Alternatively old Ford and Jaguar specialists, of which there are many, plus suppliers like TVRparts and ex-TVR main dealers, RTracing, etc.

My garage had no trouble sourcing rear brake parts for my 400 (similar to 280) when re-building the rear brakes last year, and they weren't at all dear. smile

You'll have fun with the rear calipers - being inboard, access is tight, you need to remove the handbrake calipers first, and be aware that the main calipers are lockwired - this needs to be replaced when refitting. And removing the N/S one is quite tricky because of chassis clearance. It may be more effective to buy recon. calipers, especially if the pistons may need replacing. Jag XJ, around £70 each IIRC. You probably also know that the shims behind the driveshaft flange set the camber, so they need to go back as removed, i.e. it would not be unusual for there to be more on one side than the other.

Don't presume a pull toone side is brake related. I did. Took the calipers off, cleaned them although the pistons seemed to be free. Turned out the ARB bushes were shot. Changed these and hey presto; stops in a straight line.

I will have a check on those first before playing with the calipers.

I nabbed a pair of new rear discs from an Ebay seller for £12 biggrin
Must be worth a quick search... avoid putting TVR in the title though as some people think that's a licence to print money rolleyes

I cant find a specific application for the 280i anywhere on powerflex and only a few odd ones on superflex.

does anyone do a complete kit?

Just checked the roll bar bushes and the drop links and there isnt much play at all in them, however, it is up on axle stands at the moment so it might be because all the weight is pulling everything tight!

Ive ordered some brake seals for the master cylinder, but ive also found a new unit for £40, so Im going to buy that instead and rebuild the old one for a spare!
