I have bleached my dyed red hair today. Used a 3-5 times lighter kit. normal hair ie roots now blonde. rest still pale red. How many times can i bleach what strength should i use and how often. I want to go blonde. I am a brunette. Have been RED red for six years.

Will i be able to do it. or will i have to go back to red again?

I'd really go and see a hairdresser. Bleach on hair isn't something to mess around with as it can really weaken it and cause it to break.

But if you want to, I'd try lightening again, and then covering with a blonde dye. You can get stuff to strip it entirely then re add colour.

Red's a nightmare, I thought hairdressers used strippers rather than more bleach. I'd see a hairdresser rather than risk damaging your hair.

I've got a bleached section I've got red on at the mo' but it fades to pink so quickly grrrr.

Good luck!

As a student, my hair was pink, red, blue, white - you name it.

From that experience, I can say you need at least 40% vol hydrogen peroxide to strip out an existing colour. Also that you can bleach the same hair twice, before it starts to crumble away.

Hair straightening / perming on top of lightening are a distinct no-no.

As suggested, best go to a professional hairdresser.

use your lightening stuff again but do not touch roots.massaage well into mid length and ends.check that your hair still seems in good strong condition..ie not stretchy and near breaking.

I read, and understand, posts on things from the space shuttle, plumbing, mapped bmwthingys to slick tyres on track days.

I even understand the metrosexual moisturiser male grooming stuff.

But this one.....not a bleedin word!

Best of luck anyway.

Seriously, you should really go to the hairdresser. They normally use a solution to 'strip' the hair of the red colour before bleaching to get the blonde.

You really run the risk of breaking all your hair if you use too much bleach.

If you don't want to go to salon, I'd probably stick a brown dye on it all now to even up the blonde/red mix and leave it well alone for a few months, using regular intense conditioners to get it back into decent condition.

For what it's worth if you do go ahead and stick more bleach on, try a strand test first and see what result you get. And get yourself a good silver shampoo to keep the blonde tone (silver shampoo will help remove yellow and red tones)

Haven't you ever noticed that the two are quite related? Normally symbolised by the lack of hair and ability to go use roundabouts properly, presumably because the gut/steering wheel combo normally prevent it? hehe

Is this head hair or somewhere else. In the tradition of PH this thread is worth nothing without pics.

Not good news Im afraid Jessica. My hair is normally bright red and even my hairdresser cannot bleach it back to white so I can change colour. I had to let it grow out or dye it black until it had grown out. The last time I tried dying the red out at home I ended up with pale pink ends. I now have a selection of great wigs.

You called smile

Just asked the better half her words where "Go to a salon as red is the hardest colour to lift out and if you do it again you risk your hair getting porous and brittle and will most likely break ! "

Jessica, You need to go to a professional hairdresser, as red is the most difficult colour to get out and you will never get a good result with bleach. Please find someone who specialises in colouring!

I'm a hairdresser of over 25 years experience and I would never be seen in an MX5, far too slow! wink
