I'm looking for an interesting tow-car, and having spent a while looking at Jaguars, BMWs, etc., I've ended up looking at a Range Rover Sport. I know a few others have started topics on towcars and how great these are - my question is slightly different... Is there much difference between the TDV6 and the TDV8 - I've seen the power numbers and the V8 looks about 50% higher - do the cars actually feel that much quicker?

any thoughts appreciated - it's for towing my Caterham rcaing car - not massive weight, but i'd like something quite nippy, too.

thanks,
Richard.

If you are looking at a new RR Sport, the 3.0 TDV6 is only 27PS less powerful than the TDV8 and has 40NM less torque. As the 3.0 is a little lighter the difference in performance is minimal. The TDV6 will also be more economical. There is a new TDV8 scheduled to be introduced later in the year.

I run a new Discovery 4 with the 3.0 TDV6, it is very smooth, refined and performs very well despite the overall weight. I would highly recommend it.

Thanks Paul - no, I'd be looking at the older 2.7 TDV6.

I did a quick search of forums, and there seems to be plenty of support for the V8 - especially when chipped. Will the V6 feel slow? I guess the best answer is to go and drive them, so I'm setting up a test drive, but would appreciate any thoughts beforehand.

thanks,
Richard.

I did 100 miles in a 2.7RR at the weekend. It felt fine going along, but was left wanting, quite badly, when a turn of speed was needed for overtaking - its had been remapped in Coventry and was apparently quite a bit better than before

I had an RRS TDV8 for a bit and had a Disco TDV6 on test. The performance difference was quite marked although, stating the obvious, the cars aren't the same.

Driven both for decent periods of time.

The TDv6 is pretty slow ok for just knocking about town but if you want to overtake forget it and I found it painful on the motorway between 60 -80.

The TDV8 was perfect all the time.

No comparison in my view chalk and cheese

When I used to tow my race a car I used a E39 530D touring, brilliant when towing and when not! 100mph easy towing a brian james minno and race car. I know everyone has a 5 series but there might be a reason for that, they are pretty good. I imagine a newer 530 535d would be an awesome tow car plus have room for all the race bits you'll take awning spares etc etc

TDV8 is much better.

Better still I imagine when the 4.4 TDV8 is launched.

Thanks pikeyboy - a 535d was on my list, but my wife isn't a fan of BMWs generally, and really doesn't like the 5 series - she also likes being high up in 4x4, so we may end up with the RRS.

Thanks to everybody for comments - I think you're all saying what me heart already knows - if we get a RRS, it has to be the TDV8...

the new 4.4 TDV8 sounds amazing, but probably out of budget for us right now - although maybe a good upgrade in a couple of years

cheers,
Richard.

Its a pleasure, Just be remember the range rover reliabity, two mates of mine have had them, one for only a week before he wanted his X5 3.0d sport back, the other spent more time at the dealers than on his drive. This was a couple of years ago now so maybe they have improved since then! lol

My Wife has had a Disco 3 for 3.5 years, it's been 100% reliable, no breakdowns or major issues to report. We also have 4 close friends who own Land Rovers (3 x Disco 3 and 1 x RRS) all have been 100% reliable.

Another friend who brought a new BMW X5 3.5TDI has kept his old Disco 2 as back up because the BMW is always back at the dealers with various faults such as leaking sunroof.

We have 2X disco 3's and now have a Disco 4. Other than one of the 3's having to have the suspension recalibrated on a couple of occasions they were very reliable. The 4 is so far without fault (2 months 3000 miles).

They are extremely comfortable, very practical and well equipped. Off road nothing comes close and on road they are limo like.

Great car, way better than the opposition and whilst some will have faults, of the 350 cars on our fleet many of which are German and Japanese - they are above average in terms of overall reliability and build quality.

I have a RR TDV8 and just bough a Disco 4 with the V6 diesel engine for my second home on the continent. The D4 is a great car and the Jaguar derived V6 is excellent almost to the point where I think it is better than the tdv8. I have driven 7500 miles since October and a lot on the autobahn where it cruises effortless at Km 188/h (limited). Noise levels inside the cabin are lower than in the RR and the finish is much improved on the D3. They have to up the game on the RR, otherwise the new D4 is going to take sales away from its bigger brother due to a smoother drive, more space and ultimately refinement.

If it's new, it's the revised 3.0 TDV6, not the 2.7.

After owning a couple of Discos including a series 3 I reckon that anyone who has experienced 100% reliability should be buy a lottery ticket, you are abviously very lucky people. Whilst Land Rover produce great vehicles reliability of all their products is definetly an issue, just look in your dealers workshop and find out what they are fixing, electonics all the time and suspension frequently for starters. By the way we still own a Freelender 2 and put up with its antics.

I certainly didn't by my Full Fat for the reliability.
But it makes me smile every trip.
Pulled a 25ft 3500kg trailer to my spray shop today in the snow. Trailer what trailer!!

all this talk of reliability issues sounds a bit like the TVR forums!!! smile

We've had a Freelander V6 for the last 6 years, and that seems pretty well stuck together, so I'm prepared to give LandRover another go!!
