Best time/miles to sell?
Discussion
I'd appreciate some insight into the used car market. Really, whether there are points in a cars life when resale becomes a lot more difficult or value takes a big step down, rather than a nice smooth downward line.
Reason is, I think I might be heading for one!
My 2006 E61 2.0d is getting close to 90,000 miles, so within 6 months will clock up 100k. It's my daily commuter, so mostly easy motorway stuff, and the car looks and drives as nice as it did at 40k. It has depreciated I think £3k - £4k pa over the last couple of years, but is it going to take a much bigger hit this year when it passes the magic 100k and I should be changing now?
Maybe no clear cut answers, but I would appreciate your thoughts.

Yep, that was my gut feeling too.
Even so, say my car is worth £12k today, and has been depreciating at £4k per year for the last couple of years, is it going to lose much more than £4k in the next 12 months even though it has gone past 100k miles? That is quite a big percentage hit on its current value, but no more in £'s than a newer more valuable car would lose over the same period. So maybe in £'s terms, as long as the car does not start to cost more in maintenance, there isn't a strong argument for trading up now?

Are you planning on changing the car soon anyway, or is it just the 100k that's bothering you?
If you're prepared to keep the car another year of two then I wouldn't bother changing.
Check out Autotrader for prices of sub 100k and over 100k cars...I can't see there being a huge disparity as you seem to think there will be.

Thanks for all your input. You are of course right that cars depreciate less in £'s terms as they get older/worth less, and I think on balance I may stick with it for another year or two. There's nothing like writing something down to clarify your thoughts!
My initial question though was really around whether there is enough of a spike in the depreciation/ease of sale curve when the car hits 100k miles that, if I were planning to change sometime this year, means I should be getting a move on to do so while the clock still has 5 digits on it.
