Whisky recommendations

I've been asked by a friend in the US to bring over a couple of bottles of decent malt when I next visit, but knowing nothing about whisky can anyone recommend me something readily available off the shelf (off license or supermarket) for around £30ish a bottle?

Depends what his tastes are, if he likes it a bit Peaty, go for Caol Ila(4), Laphroaig(5) or Talisker(5) slightly less so Highland Park(3-4) (on offer at £22 in Asda at the moment),Bowmore(3), Glenkinchie(3) or Jura(3). If you are unsure, go for the lesser peaty ones as the others are an aquired taste. Taste rating in brackets. There are many others available, but these are my reccomendations/favorites.

Personally I'd recommend an Ardbeg 10, available from sainsburys and the like and a cracking dram for the money - and maybe a Belvenie Doublewood, or even a Yamazaki as a complete polar opposite.

I havent tried it yet but the Glenfiddich 18 has had rave reviews from the whisky thread and is a mid priced bottle thats widely available!

Highland Park is a good bet for one of the bottles, and available in most supermarkets. I'd second the Laphroaig Quarter Cask too, as a completely different but still highly enjoyable dram.

Personally, not knowing your friends tastes, I'd steer clear of the western isles and go for sweet speysiders.

Balvenie Founders Reserve
Glenfiddich 12 or Toasted Oak (not Caoran Reserve)
AnCnoc 16
Cardhu
Aberlour A'Bunadh
Anything from Glendronach


HP 12 is a good call.
